Question 1
Where is 'Bharat Bhawan' located?
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2:
The correct answer is Bhopal. Bharat Bhawan is a globally renowned multi-arts complex and museum situated in the city of Bhopal, which is the capital of the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It was inaugurated in 1982 and is considered a prestigious institution dedicated to providing a creative space for visual arts, performing arts, and literature, especially focusing on traditional and contemporary Indian expressions. The complex is an architectural marvel designed by the celebrated Indian architect Charles Correa, whose work masterfully integrates the structure into the natural slope of the land overlooking the Upper Lake. It houses a museum of fine arts, an art gallery, a repertory theatre, a classical music and folk music library, and various cultural workshops, making it a unique hub for artists and scholars across the country.
The incorrect option is 1:
Jaipur is a major city and the capital of Rajasthan, often referred to as the Pink City, but it is not the location of Bharat Bhawan. While Jaipur is a vibrant cultural center, famous for its Rajput architecture, like the Hawa Mahal and Amber Fort, its modern cultural hub is often identified by institutions such as the Jawahar Kala Kendra. The Jawahar Kala Kendra, also designed by Charles Correa, is a parallel institution in Rajasthan that serves a similar purpose in promoting regional and national art. It is important not to confuse this institution with the one in Bhopal, as they are distinct centers serving different state governments.
The incorrect option is 3:
Delhi, the national capital of India, is home to a vast number of paramount cultural and artistic institutions, including the National Museum, the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), and the Lalit Kala Akademi. However, the specific complex known as 'Bharat Bhawan' is not located there. Had the question referred to the "National Bal Bhawan" or a similar national-level institution, Delhi would be a plausible answer. Students must remember the distinction between state-sponsored art centers and those centrally located in the capital.
The incorrect option is 4:
Ahmedabad is a historic city in Gujarat and is celebrated for its significant role in textile history and its architectural heritage, particularly the works of Le Corbusier. Cultural institutions in Ahmedabad include the Calico Museum of Textiles and the city has a strong connection with modern art figures. Despite its cultural significance, Ahmedabad is not the home of the Bharat Bhawan; that unique distinction belongs solely to the capital of Madhya Pradesh. Knowledge of the location of these key cultural landmarks is crucial for general awareness about Indian art geography.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2:
The incorrect option is 1:
The incorrect option is 3:
The incorrect option is 4:
Question 2
Name the painter who made the famous painting 'Earth':
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 4: M. F. Hussain.
The correct option is 4: M. F. Hussain (Maqbool Fida Hussain). M. F. Hussain was a towering figure of modern Indian art and a founding member of the Progressive Artists' Group (PAG), which sought to forge a modern Indian identity in art outside of European traditions. His prolific and often controversial body of work is characterized by vibrant, bold lines and a cubist-inspired, simplified figuration that drew heavily on the vitality of Indian culture, folklore, and everyday life. The painting 'Earth' is a famous work of his that captures his quintessential style, often depicting women, animals (especially horses and bullocks), and the landscape of rural India with great emotional intensity and a flattened, dynamic composition. Attributing 'Earth' to Hussain is a recognition of one of the most defining masterpieces of 20th-century Indian modernism.
The incorrect option is 1: Amrita Shergil. Amrita Sher-Gil was a revolutionary painter whose short but impactful career focused on combining European academic training with a deep affinity for Indian subjects and mural art. Her most celebrated works, such as 'Three Girls' or 'South Indian Villagers Going to Market,' are known for their somber mood, rich, earthy colours, and the poignant depiction of the melancholic lives of Indian people. Although her art features earthy tones, the specific painting 'Earth' is not part of her known body of work.
The incorrect option is 2: N. S. Bendre. Narayan Shridhar Bendre was an accomplished painter known for his post-Impressionist style and his significant role as a teacher and innovator, particularly in establishing the Faculty of Fine Arts at M.S. University, Baroda. His work is primarily recognized for his landscapes and genre paintings that moved from realism to abstract expressionism, often employing a distinct pointillist technique in his later period, but the specific monumental work titled 'Earth' is not associated with his name.
The incorrect option is 3: K. K. Hebbar. Kattingeri Krishna Hebbar was a prominent figure known for his sensitive portrayal of social life, particularly the rural communities of South India, and his involvement with the Progressive Artists' Group alongside Hussain. His style evolved from an academic realism to a more rhythmic and lyrical abstraction, capturing the movement and spirit of daily life and festivals. While Hebbar addressed themes of the land and people, the iconic painting 'Earth' is definitively attributed to the artistic genius of M. F. Hussain.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 4:
The incorrect option is 1:
The incorrect option is 2:
The incorrect option is 3:
Question 3
Who was the teacher of Ram Gopal Vijayvargiya?
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 4:
Ram Gopal Vijayvargiya is celebrated as a highly influential modern painter, primarily known for his pioneering contributions to the art scene in Rajasthan. He received his formal art education at the Maharaja's School of Arts and Crafts in Jaipur. It was during his time there that he studied under Shailendra Nath De, a revered master and a direct disciple of Abanindranath Tagore. Shailendra Nath De brought the ideals and the characteristic 'Wash' technique of the Bengal School of Art to Jaipur. Vijayvargiya's work, which synthesised this delicate wash technique with traditional Rajasthani subject matter and miniature aesthetics, thus stands as a direct legacy of De’s instruction and mentorship.
The incorrect option is 1:
Nandalal Bose was indeed one of the most prominent students of Abanindranath Tagore and a towering figure of the Bengal School, later heading the art department at Santiniketan. However, Ram Gopal Vijayvargiya did not study directly under Nandalal Bose at any formal institution. While Bose’s work and philosophy profoundly influenced the entire nationalist art movement, including the art practiced in Jaipur, Vijayvargiya’s technical training and direct line of artistic descent came through a different contemporary of Bose.
The incorrect option is 2:
Kripal Singh Shekhawat was a distinguished master craftsman and a celebrated figure in the revival of traditional Indian arts, most notably for his work in Jaipur Blue Pottery. Shekhawat was a contemporary artist whose career flourished in the mid-20th century. Crucially, Shekhawat was significantly younger than Ram Gopal Vijayvargiya and therefore was not in a position to be his teacher at the School of Art.
The incorrect option is 3:
Asit Kumar Haldar was another key exponent of the Bengal School and served as the principal of the Government School of Art in Lucknow. While he was a peer and contemporary of Shailendra Nath De, and an indirect source of influence for the Bengal School style across North India, Ram Gopal Vijayvargiya was not his student. Vijayvargiya’s education and primary training in the Wash technique were exclusively under the tutelage of Shailendra Nath De in the Jaipur art school.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 4:
The incorrect option is 1:
The incorrect option is 2:
The incorrect option is 3:
Question 4
Which cave is a cultural mix of religious arts of Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism?
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 3:
The Ellora Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Maharashtra, is the only option that represents a profound cultural synthesis of the arts of Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism within a single complex. This remarkable site comprises 34 caves excavated from the basalt cliff face between the 6th and 10th centuries CE. The caves are systematically grouped: Caves 1 through 12 are Buddhist (predominantly Mahayana), Caves 13 through 29 are Hindu, culminating in the magnificent monolithic Kailash Temple (Cave 16), and Caves 30 through 34 are Jain. This patronage by different ruling dynasties, especially the Rashtrakutas, across centuries demonstrates the religious harmony and tolerance prevalent in ancient and early medieval India, making Ellora an unparalleled example of religious pluralism expressed through art.
The incorrect option is 1 (Ajanta):
Ajanta Caves are exclusively dedicated to Buddhism. These rock-cut cave monuments date back from the 2nd century BCE to about 480 CE. They are renowned worldwide for their stunning mural paintings and sculptures depicting the Jataka tales, the stories of the Buddha's previous lives. The entire complex consists of chaityas (prayer halls) and viharas (monasteries) that strictly adhere to Buddhist themes. There is no presence of Hindu or Jain religious art or architecture in the Ajanta complex. The site is a singular, focused showcase of early Buddhist art, distinguishing it clearly from the multi-faith nature of Ellora.
The incorrect option is 2 (Elephanta):
The Elephanta Caves, located on an island near Mumbai, are primarily a complex of Hindu cave temples, specifically dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva. The colossal Mahesh Trimurti sculpture, representing the triple aspects of Shiva (creator, preserver, destroyer), is the most famous feature of this site. While the island may have early traces of Buddhist stupas, the significant and celebrated rock-cut architecture is overwhelmingly Hindu. It does not contain the distinct, segregated Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain cave sections found at Ellora.
The incorrect option is 4 (Badami):
The Badami Cave Temples, situated in Karnataka, primarily feature Hindu and Jain art, making them a dual-faith site but not a triple-faith site like Ellora. The four main caves were carved out in the 6th and 7th centuries under the early Chalukya dynasty. Caves 1, 2, and 3 are dedicated to Hindu deities like Shiva and Vishnu, while Cave 4 is dedicated to Jain Tirthankaras. The Badami caves are a vital example of early Hindu and Jain rock-cut architecture, but they do not contain a substantial, distinct, or representative collection of Buddhist art to qualify as a mixed site of all three major religions.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 3:
The incorrect option is 1:
The incorrect option is 2:
The incorrect option is 4:
Question 5
Who has written 'Natyashastra'?
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2:
Bharat Muni is universally credited as the traditional author of the Natyashastra, the oldest and most comprehensive surviving treatise on the dramatic arts, performance, and stagecraft in Sanskrit literature. Composed between 200 BCE and 200 CE, this monumental text is considered the Natya Veda (Science of Drama) of ancient India. The text systematically codifies all aspects of classical Indian performance, from the principles of acting (abhinaya), music (sangeet), and dance (nritya) to stage architecture and costume. Most crucially, the Natyashastra laid down the foundational theory of Rasa (aesthetic relish) and Bhava (psychological states), which is the cornerstone of all subsequent Indian aesthetic thought and classical arts.
The incorrect option is 1:
Yashodhar Pandit is a later commentator, not the original author. He is most famous for writing the Jayamañgalā, a significant and influential commentary on the Kama Sutra by Vatsyayana. His work elaborates on the concept of the sixty-four arts (kalas), including painting, dance, and music, but he did not author the original classical treatise on drama. Therefore, while he contributed to Indian aesthetics, his work is derivative of earlier texts and not the original Natyashastra.
The incorrect option is 3:
Vatsyayan is the celebrated author of the Kama Sutra, a classical Sanskrit text on human sexual behavior, social conduct, and the art of living. Although the Kama Sutra is a major text in Indian literary history and discusses some arts, its central focus on Kama is distinct from the comprehensive theories of performance, drama composition, and stage production that are the sole subject of the Natyashastra. It is a profound work of social science, but not the canonical text for the performing arts.
The incorrect option is 4:
Jaidev was a 12th-century Sanskrit poet and devotional singer, renowned for his lyrical epic poem, the Gita Govinda. This work is a crucial text in the Bhakti tradition, describing the love between Radha and Krishna with immense poetic and emotional depth. The Gita Govinda is often the source material for classical Indian dance and music performances, but Jaidev was a poet whose work is performed, not the original theoretician who codified the rules of how a performance should be conducted, which is Bharat Muni's achievement.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2:
The incorrect option is 1:
The incorrect option is 3:
The incorrect option is 4:
Question 6
Which new technique introduced in Indian Art by Abanindranath Tagore ?
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 3:
The new technique introduced and pioneered in Indian art by Abanindranath Tagore is the Wash technique, which became the signature style of the Bengal School of Art. This method was adapted from the Japanese Nihonga style, but its introduction and masterful adaptation in India was revolutionary, marking a decisive break from Western academic realism. The wash technique involves repeatedly applying highly transparent layers of watercolor pigment to the paper and then gently washing or soaking the painting in water to soften the forms and remove excess pigment. This complex layering and washing process creates a distinctively soft, hazy, and atmospheric, or 'ethereal,' effect. Abanindranath used this technique to establish a uniquely indigenous and spiritual Indian aesthetic, aligning the modern art movement with the nationalist Swadeshi ideology.
The incorrect option is 1:
The term Bengal refers to the School of Art, officially the Bengal School of Art, which was the art movement founded by Abanindranath Tagore. While the Wash technique is the single most defining characteristic of the Bengal School's visual style, Bengal itself is the name of the movement, not the technique. This movement sought to revive traditional Indian artistic practices, drawing heavily from Ajanta, Mughal, and Rajput styles, to develop a nationalist art language. Therefore, the school is the context for the technique, but it is not the technique itself.
The incorrect option is 2:
Patna refers to the Patna School of Painting, also known as the Company Style or Patna Qalam. This was a regional school of miniature painting that developed in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, well over a century before Abanindranath's movement. It was characterized by a fusion of subtle Mughal techniques with European elements like linear perspective and shading, largely for British patronage. This school's stylistic and historical context is entirely separate and distinct from the Wash technique introduced by Tagore in the early 20th century.
The incorrect option is 4:
Pahari is a generic term used to classify the miniature painting schools that flourished in the Himalayan hill kingdoms (such as Basohli and Kangra) between the 17th and 19th centuries. It describes a regional set of art styles or schools, not a specific artistic technique introduced by Abanindranath Tagore. These Pahari paintings typically utilized Gouache (opaque watercolour) and mineral pigments on paper, making them stylistically and technically distinct from the ethereal and modern Wash method.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 3: वाश
The incorrect option is 1: बंगाल
The incorrect option is 2: पटना
The incorrect option is 4: पहाड़ी
Question 7
Sequence the following styles period wise:
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 3:
The correct chronological order of these four major Indian art styles is Ajanta Painting, Jain Painting, Mughal School, and Kangra Painting. Ajanta Painting represents the earliest phase, flourishing from roughly the 2nd century BCE to the 5th century CE, and is the peak of early Indian mural tradition. It is followed by Jain Painting (or Apabhramsa style), which emerged in Western India, dominating miniature painting from the 11th to the 16th centuries. Next, the Mughal School was established under Emperor Akbar in the mid-16th century, introducing a highly refined imperial court style that lasted until the 18th century. Finally, Kangra Painting developed in the Pahari region in the 18th and early 19th centuries, evolving directly from the earlier Mughal and Basohli styles to become the most lyrical of the Pahari schools. Therefore, arranging them by their primary period of influence gives us the correct sequence.
The incorrect option is 1:
Option 1 incorrectly sequences Kangra Painting and Mughal School. The sequence provided is Ajanta Painting, Jain Painting, Kangra Painting, Mughal School. This places the Kangra school (18th-19th century) before the Mughal School (16th-18th century) in its full form, which is chronologically inaccurate. The Kangra school, in fact, reached its zenith and distinct style as an evolution and refinement after the decline of the central Mughal court patronage. Furthermore, the early Mughal school begins much earlier than the distinct Kangra style emerged.
The incorrect option is 2:
Option 2, Kangra Painting, Jain Painting, Mughal School, Ajanta Painting, is completely reversed in its overall chronology. Ajanta Painting is the oldest style among the four, dating back to before the Common Era, representing ancient cave murals. By placing Ajanta last and Kangra (one of the latest, 18th-19th century) first, this option fails to grasp the fundamental timeline of Indian art, mistakenly sequencing later miniature traditions before the foundational art of the classical period.
The incorrect option is 4:
Option 4 presents the order as Mughal School, Ajanta Painting, Jain Painting, Kangra Painting. This order places the Mughal School (starting 16th century CE) as the earliest, which is incorrect. Ajanta is older than all the other styles mentioned, and the Jain miniature style preceded the establishment of the Mughal school by several centuries, flourishing in the 11th to 16th centuries CE. A proper historical sequence must begin with the ancient art of Ajanta.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 3:
The incorrect option is 1:
The incorrect option is 2:
The incorrect option is 4:
Question 8
The first oleographs were installed and used by the famous artist, name the artist:
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2:
Raja Ravi Verma is the artist who pioneered the installation and use of oleography in India. Oleography, or chromolithography, is a process used to produce color prints that look similar to oil paintings. Recognizing the immense popularity of his oil paintings of Hindu gods, goddesses, and epic scenes, Ravi Verma established the Raja Ravi Varma Press near Bombay in 1894. His goal was to democratize his art by making affordable reproductions accessible to the masses, turning mythological subjects into household imagery throughout India. This bold step was a major moment in the history of Indian art, transitioning from elite patronage to mass production, though it later faced criticism from nationalist art movements for its commercial nature.
The incorrect option is 1:
E. B. Havell was a British art administrator and historian who served as the Principal of the Calcutta School of Art. Far from installing oleograph presses, Havell was a strong proponent of traditional Indian artistic values and an outspoken critic of the prevailing colonial academic art style. He actively worked to remove European methods from art school curricula and was instrumental in collaborating with Abanindranath Tagore to form the Bengal School of Art, which aimed to revive indigenous Indian painting techniques.
The incorrect option is 3:
Abanindranath Tagore was the central figure and founder of the Bengal School of Art, which arose in the early 20th century as a nationalist movement. His artistic philosophy was fundamentally opposed to the Western realism and the mechanical reproduction (like oleography) championed by Raja Ravi Verma. Tagore is instead known for developing the delicate, ethereal Wash Technique, drawing inspiration from Japanese and Indian miniature traditions, focusing on spiritual and historical themes, not commercial printing.
The incorrect option is 4:
Yamini Roy, often called the 'Picasso of India,' was a highly influential 20th-century artist who completely rejected Western academic styles and the commercial mass-market approach. He developed a unique style inspired by the simplified forms and bold, flat colors of Bengali folk traditions, particularly the Kalighat Pat painting style. His artistic focus was on creating a modern Indian aesthetic rooted in the rural and indigenous, which stands in conceptual opposition to the use of an industrial press like oleography.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2:
The incorrect option is 1: ई० बी० हैवल
The incorrect option is 3: अबनीन्द्रनाथ टैगोर
The incorrect option is 4: यामिनी रॉय
Question 9
Kalpasutra manuscript is mainly known in which school?
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 4:
The correct option is 4: The Kalpasutra manuscript is fundamentally associated with the Jain School of painting. The Kalpasutra is a crucial Jain holy text containing the biographies of the Tirthankaras, particularly Mahavira, and its illustration became the most significant artistic project sponsored by the Svetambara Jain community in Western India (Gujarat and Rajasthan) from the 11th to the 16th centuries. The vibrant, highly stylized miniature paintings illustrating this text are the chief examples of the Western Indian style, also known as the Apabhransha style, which art historians frequently classify under the broader term "Jain School" due to the overwhelming dominance of Jain religious subject matter. The characteristic features of these illustrations, such as the protruding farther eye, angular figures, and extensive use of gold and bright colours, were specifically developed for these Jain manuscripts, underscoring the deep connection between the text and the school.
The incorrect option is 1:
The Pal School, or Pala period painting, flourished in Eastern India (Bengal and Bihar) from the 8th to the 12th centuries and was overwhelmingly dedicated to the illustration of Buddhist manuscripts, such as the Prajnaparamita texts. This school primarily used palm-leaf manuscripts and was a key centre for Mahayana Buddhism, having no primary association with the core Jain text, the Kalpasutra. Stylistically, the Pal School featured a distinctively curvilinear, graceful, and dark-toned style influenced by the murals of Ajanta, which is fundamentally different from the angularity of the Kalpasutra illustrations.
The incorrect option is 2:
The Rajasthan School of painting (Rajput painting) emerged and flourished later, primarily from the 16th to the 19th centuries, focusing predominantly on Hindu religious and secular themes. Its core subjects include Ragamala series, Raslila of Krishna, Ramayana, and courtly portraits, demonstrating a deep commitment to Vaishnavite and Saivite narratives. While some of its sub-schools developed out of the Western Indian style, the Rajasthan School as a whole is defined by its commitment to the Hindu Rajput court culture, not by the mass illustration of central Jain texts like the Kalpasutra.
The incorrect option is 3:
The Kalighat School is an entirely different and much more recent tradition, emerging in the 19th century in Calcutta (Kolkata) near the Kalighat Temple. This school is a form of bazaar art known for its quick, sweeping brushstrokes and commentary on contemporary social life, Hindu deities, and the British Babu culture, painted mainly on cloth and paper. It is entirely unrelated, both chronologically (it is centuries later) and geographically (it is from Eastern India), to the ancient practice of illustrating sacred Jain texts like the Kalpasutra in the Western Indian miniature style.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 4:
The incorrect option is 1:
The incorrect option is 2:
The incorrect option is 3:
Question 10
What is colour?
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 1: Property of light.
Color is fundamentally a phenomenon of physics and optics, not an inherent quality of an object. The existence and perception of color are entirely dependent on light. Specifically, color is the visual perception that occurs when the human eye receives different wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum, which is the definition of visible light. When white light—which contains all colors—strikes an object, the matter in the object absorbs some wavelengths and reflects others. The reflected wavelengths are the ones our eyes perceive, and our brain interprets, as a specific color. Therefore, the essential and defining property of color is its source and medium: light.
The incorrect option is 2: Property of emotion.
While color undoubtedly has a profound psychological impact and is a critical tool for artists to evoke emotion, emotion is a subjective human response, not the physical nature of color. The use of color in art therapy or to symbolize feelings is an aesthetic application of color theory. However, the foundational definition of color lies in the objective science of light, wavelengths, and human perception. Color's relationship to emotion is associative, secondary, and cultural, not intrinsic to its physical definition.
The incorrect option is 3: Property of drawing.
Drawing is defined as the act of making a picture or plan using lines and marks. Color is an element that can be applied to a drawing (as in painting or colored sketching), but it is not the defining property of drawing, nor is it what color is. The essence of drawing is form, line, and composition, which can exist perfectly well in monochrome. Conversely, color exists in the world—in rainbows, prisms, and light itself—entirely independently of the art of drawing.
The incorrect option is 4: Property of matter.
This is a very common misunderstanding. Matter is the vehicle for pigment or dye, but it does not intrinsically hold the color. A red apple appears red because its skin contains molecules that absorb all the wavelengths of light except for red. It is the red wavelength light that is reflected from the apple and travels to your eye that defines the color. The matter's molecular structure determines which light is absorbed, but the actual color is the light energy (wavelength) that is bounced off the matter, confirming that color is fundamentally a property of light.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 1:
The incorrect option is 2:
The incorrect option is 3:
(Property of Drawing/Line work)
The incorrect option is 4:
Question 11
Why is used perspective in painting?
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 4: To create illusion of distance
Perspective is a fundamental technique in painting whose primary purpose is to transform a flat, two-dimensional surface (like a canvas or paper) into a convincing illusion of a three-dimensional world. This illusion is specifically the creation of distance and depth, making objects appear to recede into space. Artists use systems like linear perspective, which is a mathematical method where parallel lines appear to converge at a single vanishing point on the horizon line, to accurately calculate the diminishing size of objects as they move into the background. Furthermore, aerial or atmospheric perspective is used in conjunction, which involves depicting distant objects with lighter, less saturated colors and softer contrasts to simulate the natural haziness of the atmosphere, thereby enhancing the overall illusion of great depth and realism.
The incorrect options are 1, 2, and 3:
The incorrect option is 1: To enhance textural quality
This is incorrect because textural quality, referring to the surface feel or appearance of an object (e.g., rough, smooth, bumpy), is a characteristic of either actual texture (created by thick paint like impasto) or visual texture (created by meticulous brushwork and line variations). Perspective is a spatial arrangement tool and is not primarily focused on rendering the tactile qualities of surfaces.
The incorrect option is 2: To retain two dimensionality
This option is incorrect because it is the exact opposite of perspective’s goal. The canvas inherently possesses two-dimensionality (height and width), and the entire purpose of introducing perspective is to break that flatness by creating a powerful illusion of three dimensions (depth or distance) on the flat plane, making it appear like a window into another world.
The incorrect option is 3: To create variety of tones
While manipulating tones (or value) is a technique used in painting to achieve modeling, form, and light effects (chiaroscuro), and while tonal manipulation is part of aerial perspective, the main objective of perspective is not simply to create an array of tones. The ultimate aim of tonal changes in the context of perspective is to serve the greater goal of communicating the illusion of distance.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 4:
The incorrect option is 1:
The incorrect option is 2:
The incorrect option is 3:
Question 12
Dhanraj Bhagat is well known for his genre :
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2: Sculpture
Dhanraj Bhagat (1917–1988) is unequivocally recognized as one of the most transformative and pioneering figures of modern Indian sculpture. He studied sculpture at the Mayo School of Art in Lahore and later dedicated three decades of his career to teaching and leading the Sculpture Department at the College of Art, Delhi. Bhagat deliberately moved beyond the academic realism of the colonial era, evolving a distinctive modernist style characterized by a powerful synthesis of Indian spiritual and mythological themes with abstract, geometrically inspired forms. His primary artistic focus was the creation of three-dimensional, volumetric pieces, primarily in wood, stone, and metal, creating celebrated works like the 'Monarch Series' and 'Mahakala' which cemented his reputation as a master sculptor who fundamentally redefined the genre in post-independence India.
The incorrect option is 1: Photography
Dhanraj Bhagat was fundamentally a sculptor, making his entire career and reputation in the three-dimensional medium. Photography is a two-dimensional art form concerned with light, composition, and timing to capture images from the real world. Bhagat's life work focused on adding mass and volume to space, in direct contrast to the instantaneous and planar nature of photography. His entire artistic legacy, including his significant role as a teacher, is built upon his contribution to volumetric and spatial art, making photography an incorrect classification for his main genre.
The incorrect option is 3: Print
Although most fine artists, including Dhanraj Bhagat, often produce drawings and sketches as preparation for their main works, the genre of 'Print' or printmaking was not his primary artistic discipline or the source of his renown. Printmaking is a specialized process involving techniques like etching, lithography, or screen-printing to produce multiple copies of an image. Bhagat's most significant and influential works were unique, handmade sculptures, which showcase his mastery of carving and assemblage, not the technical demands of reproductive graphic art.
The incorrect option is 4: Ceramic
While Dhanraj Bhagat did receive his initial training in clay modeling and experimented with various sculptural materials including cement, paper maché, and metals, his most significant and characteristic body of work was not in the field of ceramic art. Ceramic art involves shaping, firing, and often glazing clay or earthen materials, typically for pottery or fired artifacts. His most acclaimed and style-defining sculptures were executed in non-ceramic materials such as carved wood, chiseled stone, and constructed metal forms, making the term 'Ceramic' too narrow and inaccurate to describe his well-known genre.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2:
The incorrect option is 1:
The incorrect option is 3:
The incorrect option is 4:
Question 13
The 'Theory of Dhvani' was associated with:
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2:
The 'Theory of Dhvani', or the doctrine of suggestion, is primarily and systematically associated with the 9th-century Sanskrit literary critic Anandavardhana. He is the author of the monumental work Dhvanyaloka, in which he conclusively establishes Dhvani as the Kāvyasyātmā (the soul or essence of poetry). The Dhvani theory suggests that the true poetic appeal lies not in the literal or explicit meaning (vāchyārtha), but in the suggested, implicit meaning (vyangyārtha), which resonates with the reader like an echo. This concept was a revolutionary contribution to Indian aesthetics, asserting that the suggested sense—particularly the suggestion of Rasa (sentiment/emotion)—is the most important element for a supreme aesthetic experience.
The incorrect option is 1:
Banbhatt (also known as Bana) was a prominent Sanskrit prose writer and poet who flourished in the 7th century, two centuries before the Dhvani school gained prominence. His major works are the historical biography Harshacharita and the romantic novel Kadambari. Although he was a master of the elaborate Kavya style of literature, his contribution is in the realm of literary creation and historical prose, not the formal philosophical codification of a theory of literary criticism like Dhvani.
The incorrect option is 3:
Abhinavgupta was indeed a renowned Kashmiri philosopher and aesthetician (c. 950–1020 CE), but he was a successor to Anandavardhana, not the originator of the Dhvani theory. His essential role was that of a commentator and systematizer. His famous work, the Lochana, is a brilliant and crucial defense, elaboration, and detailed exposition of Anandavardhana’s Dhvanyaloka. He is also celebrated for his definitive interpretation and synthesis of the Rasa theory with the Dhvani doctrine.
The incorrect option is 4:
Rajshekher (Rajasekhara) was a well-known Sanskrit poet, dramatist, and critic of the late 9th and early 10th centuries. His principal work on poetics, Kāvya Mīmāṃsā, is an important treatise that systematically discusses the process and methodology of composing poetry. While he is a key figure in the history of Sanskrit poetics and addressed many concepts, including those related to poetic expression, his work is primarily a practical guide for poets on elements like literary conventions and styles, and he is not credited with originating the philosophical concept of Dhvani as the soul of poetry.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2:
The incorrect option is 1:
The incorrect option is 3:
The incorrect option is 4:
Question 14
Where is painted 'Bodhisattva Padmapani' Fresco Painting ?
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2:
The magnificent fresco painting of the 'Bodhisattva Padmapani' is universally recognized as the central masterpiece of the Buddhist rock-cut cave complex at Ajanta, Maharashtra. This iconic painting is strategically situated on the back wall of the ante-chamber inside Cave 1, a vihara (monastery) dating back to the Vakataka period, specifically the late 5th or early 6th century CE. Padmapani, whose name means 'Holder of the Lotus,' represents Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. The painting is highly revered for its immense grace, the delicate tribhanga (triple-bend) posture, the subtle modulation of colour (foreshadowing chiaroscuro), and the emotional depth in its expression, collectively embodying the spiritual and aesthetic peak of the classical Indian wall painting tradition.
The incorrect option is 1:
Bagh Caves, located in Madhya Pradesh, also contain significant examples of ancient Indian Buddhist mural paintings from a similar period (5th to 7th centuries CE) and share a common style with Ajanta. However, the subjects in Bagh largely focus on vibrant scenes of courtly life, processions, music, and dance, along with Jataka narratives. While Bagh is crucial to the study of ancient Indian frescoes, it is not the home of the specific, world-famous 'Bodhisattva Padmapani' fresco from Cave 1.
The incorrect option is 3:
Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram) is an entirely different type of art centre, renowned for the spectacular structural and rock-cut architecture of the Pallava dynasty (7th-8th centuries CE) in Tamil Nadu. The site is characterized by monolithic temples (rathas), rock-cut caves (mandapas), and giant open-air bas-reliefs, such as the Descent of the Ganga. The primary art form here is sculpture and stone architecture, not the large-scale fresco painting that defines the Buddhist monasteries of Ajanta.
The incorrect option is 4:
Sigiriya is a historical and artistic site located in Sri Lanka, not India, and is famous for its own distinct set of non-religious rock paintings. The frescoes found in a sheltered pocket of the Sigiriya rock fortress, generally identified as celestial maidens or Apsaras, were painted in the 5th century CE. While these paintings bear a certain stylistic and technical affinity to Ajanta art, they are geographically distinct and depict a different subject matter, meaning the 'Bodhisattva Padmapani' of Ajanta is not to be confused with the Sigiriya maidens.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2:
The incorrect option is 1:
The incorrect option is 3:
The incorrect option is 4:
Question 15
Vertical line depicts:
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 4:
The vertical line, one of the most fundamental elements in visual art and design, is universally associated with stability, strength, and a sense of permanence or height. Because a vertical line stands upright, defying gravity, it psychologically evokes feelings of uprightness, rigidity, and aspiration, much like a standing human figure, a towering column, or a skyscraper. In art theory and compositional analysis, this upward thrust and commanding presence are symbolically translated into Dignity, Power, and Formalism. The dominance of vertical lines often lends a composition a feeling of solemnity and grandeur, establishing a serious and respectful mood.
The incorrect option is 1:
The term 'Base' or foundation in a two-dimensional composition is typically associated with the horizontal line. Horizontal lines, running parallel to the ground or the horizon, inherently provide a feeling of rest, calmness, and stability. They define the plane upon which everything else stands or rests, thus forming the compositional 'base' or bedrock. A vertical line, by contrast, is dynamic in its upward direction and is meant to project from the base, symbolizing growth, aspiration, or power, not the base itself.
The incorrect option is 2:
'Agitation' is a quality most effectively depicted by diagonal or zig-zag lines. Diagonal lines suggest rapid, unstable, or uncontrolled movement because they are visually perceived as falling or rising at speed, which creates tension. When a line becomes a series of sharp, quick diagonals (a zig-zag), the tension, energy, and unrest are compounded, successfully communicating a feeling of conflict or agitation to the viewer. The steady, firm vertical line represents unyielding stability, making it the conceptual opposite of agitation.
The incorrect option is 3:
'Confusion' in a visual composition is not typically represented by the simple, singular, and clear direction of a vertical line. Confusion is an emotional or visual state of disorder, chaos, or complexity, which is best communicated by its visual counterpart. This state is visually rendered through a dense network of irregular, broken, intersecting, and overlapping lines that create visual clutter. Such a cluttered and non-directional arrangement accurately conveys the psychological state of being confused or lost, unlike the clear, assertive direction of a vertical line.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 4:
The incorrect option is 1:
The incorrect option is 2:
The incorrect option is 3:
Question 16
Spiral line do not express :
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 4:
In the study of art and design, the expression of lines is based on their form and the psychological effect they have on the viewer. A spiral line is a curved, continuous line that winds outwards from a central point, or inwards toward one. The term "Dash" typically refers to a quick, sudden, or energetic forward movement (a dart), or stylistically, a short, discontinuous mark (a dashed line). Since the spiral line is defined by its continuous, cyclical, and expanding or contracting curve—a form of sustained, rotational motion—it fundamentally does not suggest the abrupt, linear, or segmented movement implied by "Dash." Therefore, "Dash" is the expression a spiral line is least likely to convey.
The incorrect option is 1:
Excitement is strongly expressed by the spiral line because its swirling, non-linear quality creates a profound sense of dynamic energy and emotional intensity. Artists often use the spiral to depict forces that are chaotic, energetic, or highly charged, such as the swirling winds or cosmic power seen in famous works like Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night. This visually active movement prevents the viewer’s eye from resting, creating a visual restlessness and vitality that conveys excitement.
The incorrect option is 2:
Power is a classic and universal association of the spiral form. Historically, the spiral is an ancient, archetypal symbol that represents the vast, transformative forces of nature and the cosmos, such as whirlpools, galaxies, or the continuous cycle of growth and evolution. By representing expansion from a single point, it symbolizes universal energy, creation, and enduring personal or divine power, making it an extremely effective visual metaphor for force and strength.
The incorrect option is 3:
Motion is the most direct expression of a spiral line. The continuous, winding path of the line forces the viewer's eye to follow its course, creating an inherent and intense sense of movement. This continuous progression suggests spinning, rotation, or a journey, effectively conveying sustained, fluid movement. Any line that is curved or diagonal is generally used to imply action and dynamism, and the spiral is the quintessential example of this principle.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 4:
The incorrect option is 1:
The incorrect option is 2:
The incorrect option is 3:
Question 17
In which medium is the "Santhal Family" made ?
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 3:
The correct option is 3: Cement Concrete. The celebrated outdoor sculpture "Santhal Family," created by the visionary artist Ramkinkar Baij in 1938, is made from a highly unconventional combination of cement, laterite mortar, and locally sourced laterite gravel. This choice was a revolutionary step in Indian art, as Baij deliberately abandoned the traditional, expensive media like bronze or fine stone in favour of this inexpensive and readily available building material. His pioneering use of cement concrete for such a large-scale, public sculpture cemented its status as India's first public modernist work. The earthy, raw texture provided by the laterite gravel further connected the sculpture's medium to its subject—a Santhal tribal family—endowing their simple, migrating existence with a profound sense of dignity and monumental, modern realism.
The incorrect option is 1, 2, and 4:
The other options represent traditional media which are inappropriate for this specific work. Terracotta (baked clay) is historically significant in Indian art, used primarily for toys, small figures, and folk art, but it would lack the structural integrity and scale required for Baij's monumental outdoor creation. While a few later sculptures by others used this medium, the Santhal Family demanded greater permanence. Sand Stone was the conventional material for temple carvings and classical monumental figures, such as the famous Kushana-period Buddha images; Baij’s decision to use cement was a modern political and artistic statement, rejecting the expensive legacy of stone carving for an indigenous, cost-effective alternative that brought art closer to the people. Lastly, Wood, while used in folk and regional carving traditions, is simply not durable enough for a permanent, large-scale public work exposed to the unpredictable weather of Santiniketan, unlike the robust nature of reinforced concrete. The Santhal Family is a testament to Baij's radical use of modern, non-traditional media.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 3:
The incorrect option is 1:
The incorrect option is 2:
The incorrect option is 4:
Question 18
Which of the state has pre-historic site of 'Pachmarhi'?
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 1: Madhya Pradesh.
Pachmarhi is correctly identified as a pre-historic site situated in the state of Madhya Pradesh, specifically within the Satpura Range of the Hoshangabad (Narmadapuram) district. This location is one of the most important hubs in Central India for studying early human history, primarily because of its numerous rock shelters and cave paintings. These paintings, which are spread across dozens of shelters like the Jambu Dwip and Dorothy Deep, represent continuous human occupation from the Mesolithic (Middle Stone Age) to the historical period. The rock art at Pachmarhi is a crucial resource for understanding the transition of human societies, making its geographical setting in Madhya Pradesh a cornerstone of Indian pre-historic archaeology.
The incorrect option is 2: Uttar Pradesh.
While Uttar Pradesh has its own significant pre-historic legacy, it does not include Pachmarhi. The primary rock art centres in Uttar Pradesh are geographically concentrated in the Vindhyan ranges, notably around the Mirzapur district, such as the famous sites of Likhunia and Mahadaria. These rock shelters and paintings, though immensely valuable, belong to a separate archaeological cluster and are distinct from the Satpura-centered art found at Pachmarhi, which falls clearly within the boundaries of Madhya Pradesh.
The incorrect option is 3: Maharashtra.
Maharashtra is an important state for Indian archaeology, boasting prominent sites from the Chalcolithic and Neolithic periods like Inamgaon and Jorwe. However, the pre-historic site of Pachmarhi is not located within Maharashtra's borders. The Satpura range, where Pachmarhi is situated, is a massive geological feature, but the specific cultural and geographical area associated with the Pachmarhi rock shelters lies entirely in Madhya Pradesh, distinguishing it from the rock art found in the Konkan region of Maharashtra.
The incorrect option is 4: Odisha.
Odisha contains rich archaeological evidence of pre-historic cultures, including significant Paleolithic tool finds and rock paintings. Major pre-historic sites in Odisha, such as Ushakothi and Gudahandi, are located far to the east of Central India. These eastern sites exhibit regional stylistic differences and are geographically separate from the Central Indian plateau. Therefore, the world-renowned Pachmarhi pre-historic site is geographically and archaeologically distinct from the ancient heritage found in Odisha.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 1:
The incorrect option is 2:
The incorrect option is 3:
The incorrect option is 4:
Question 19
In a painting the theory of showing nearer object big and distant object small is called:
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 3: Perspective
Perspective is the fundamental art theory and technique used to graphically depict three-dimensional objects and spatial relationships on a two-dimensional surface, such as a canvas or paper. The principle described in the question, where closer objects are drawn larger and objects receding into the distance are progressively drawn smaller, is the core visual law upon which linear perspective is based. This phenomenon, known as diminution, is what creates the powerful illusion of depth, distance, and recession, making the flat image appear volumetric and realistic. Italian Renaissance artists codified this system, using vanishing points on a horizon line to ensure that all parallel lines converge and that the sizes of objects accurately decrease in relation to their distance from the viewer's fixed vantage point.
The incorrect option is 1: Proportion
Proportion refers to the relative size relationship between different parts of a single object or between two or more objects in a composition. For example, a sculptor uses proportion to ensure a figure's head is the correct size compared to its body, or a painter uses it to ensure a tree is of reasonable size next to a building. It establishes harmonious and realistic size comparisons within the picture plane, but it is not the theory that dictates how an object's size must change specifically due to its distance from the viewer. While perspective relies on proportional scaling to work, proportion itself is a general concept of size relativity, not the specific mechanism for creating depth.
The incorrect option is 2: Space
Space is one of the basic elements of art, referring to the area occupied by the artwork (actual space) or the illusion of depth created within the artwork (implied space). The question asks for the theory or method used to show the difference in size, not the element itself. Therefore, while a successful application of perspective creates the illusion of space, the term 'Space' is too broad and descriptive; it does not name the specific rule or method that governs the size change.
The incorrect option is 4: Golden Ratio
The Golden Ratio (or Divine Proportion) is a mathematical relationship, approximately 1.618:1, often used in art and architecture as a rule of thumb for achieving harmonious and aesthetically pleasing compositions. Artists apply this ratio to determine the placement of key elements or the overall dimensions of their work for visual balance. It is a compositional tool for aesthetics and harmony and has no direct relationship to the optical theory of rendering objects smaller as they recede into the background.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 3: परिप्रेक्ष्य
The incorrect option is 1: प्रमाण
The incorrect option is 2: अन्तराल
The incorrect option is 4: स्वर्णिम अनुपात
Question 20
Maharaja Sansarchand was the ruler patron of which school?
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2:
Maharaja Sansar Chand (reigned 1775–1823) is universally acknowledged as the most important patron of the Kangra School of Painting. His rule is considered the 'Golden Age' of Kangra art, a style renowned for its lyrical beauty, naturalistic drawing, delicate coloring, and exquisite draughtsmanship. Sansar Chand was a devout Vaishnavite, and his patronage directed his court painters to produce thousands of miniature paintings focusing primarily on romantic and devotional narratives of Radha and Krishna from texts like the Gita Govinda and Bhagavata Purana. His aesthetic interest cemented the school's reputation for portraying ideal feminine beauty and capturing the soft, atmospheric landscapes of the Himalayan foothills, making him the definitive ruler associated with the Kangra style's zenith.
The incorrect option is 1:
The Kishangarh school of painting, distinct from the Pahari schools, is a prominent style of Rajasthani miniature painting. Its primary patron was Raja Sawant Singh, who ruled in the 18th century and wrote poetry under the name Nagari Das. Kishangarh art is famously known for its iconic subject, Bani Thani, and its unique stylistic conventions of elongated faces, pointed noses, and exaggerated, lotus-petal eyes. These features and its geographical location in Rajasthan clearly distinguish it from the art flourishing under Maharaja Sansar Chand in the Kangra hills. Therefore, it is incorrect to associate Sansar Chand with Kishangarh.
The incorrect option is 3:
Basohali is historically one of the earliest and stylistically most distinct of the Pahari schools, largely predating the period of Kangra's dominance under Sansar Chand. This school flourished primarily in the late 17th and early 18th centuries under patrons like Raja Kirpal Pal. Basohali paintings are known for their strong, intense, pure colors, geometric compositions, and bold, dynamic lines. This raw, dramatic aesthetic stands in sharp contrast to the refined, delicate, and naturalistic approach that was characteristic of the Kangra school under Maharaja Sansar Chand.
The incorrect option is 4:
The Bundi school belongs to the Hadoti sub-school of Rajasthani painting and is geographically located far south in Rajasthan, having no cultural connection to the Pahari style. This school reached its peak earlier than the Kangra school, in the 17th and 18th centuries, under rulers like Rao Umed Singh. Bundi art is highly celebrated for its depictions of royal hunting scenes and its thematic focus on the Baramasa (the twelve months) and Ragamala (musical modes). The bold use of color, emphasis on nature, and courtly themes in Bundi art differentiate it from the delicate, lyrical Krishna-centric art of Kangra.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2:
The incorrect option is 1:
The incorrect option is 3:
The incorrect option is 4:
