Who among the following critiqued the concept of 'general' intelligence and proposed an alternative theory of intelligence ?

Question

Accepted Answer

Option 2, Howard Gardner, is the correct answer because he is renowned for critiquing the traditional concept of 'general' intelligence and proposing an alternative theory known as the Theory of Multiple Intelligences. Gardner's theory, introduced in his 1983 book "Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences," argues that intelligence is not a single, unified ability. Instead, he suggests that there are multiple distinct types of intelligences, each representing different ways of processing information and solving problems. These intelligences include linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, musical, bodily-kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and later, naturalistic and existential intelligences. Gardner's work has had a significant impact on education and psychology, encouraging a broader understanding of human capabilities beyond traditional IQ tests.

Now, let's explain why the other options are incorrect:

1. **Jean Piaget**: Piaget was a Swiss psychologist known for his work on child development and cognitive development theory. He did not specifically critique the concept of 'general' intelligence. Instead, he focused on how children develop cognitive abilities through stages, such as the sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, and formal operational stages. His work was more about understanding the processes of thinking and learning in children rather than proposing an alternative theory of intelligence.

3. **Lev Vygotsky**: Vygotsky was a Russian psychologist known for his sociocultural theory of cognitive development. He emphasized the role of social interaction and cultural context in learning and development. While Vygotsky's work is influential in understanding cognitive development, he did not specifically critique the concept of 'general' intelligence or propose an alternative theory of intelligence like Gardner did.

4. **Charles Spearman**: Spearman was a British psychologist who is actually associated with the concept of 'general' intelligence, often referred to as the 'g factor.' He proposed that a single underlying factor, the 'g factor,' accounted for the correlations observed between different cognitive tasks. Spearman's work is foundational to the traditional view of intelligence as a single, general ability, which is the very concept Gardner critiqued.

In summary, Howard Gardner is the correct answer because he directly challenged the traditional view of intelligence as a single, general ability and introduced the Theory of Multiple Intelligences, which has been influential in expanding the understanding of human intelligence.
