HTET Exam - Level 1 Prt - Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Shortly after the Albatross appeared in Coleridge's "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," the ice cracked, and the ship was able to steer through. This is explicitly stated in the poem. The arrival of the Albatross is associated with a change in the weather and a break in the icy conditions that had trapped the ship.

Here's why the other options are incorrect:

• Option 1: The Ancient Mariner drove away the Albatross. This is incorrect because the Ancient Mariner killed the Albatross, but this happened later in the poem, not shortly after its initial appearance.

• Option 3: The ice caved in suddenly and killed all except the Ancient Mariner. This is incorrect because the ice cracking allowed the ship to move, not collapse and kill the crew. The crew all die later in the poem, but not due to the ice collapsing.

• Option 4: Slimy creatures appeared in the water surrounding the ship. While slimy creatures do appear later in the poem, they do not appear immediately after the Albatross arrives. Their appearance is associated with the Mariner's guilt and the stagnant, becalmed state of the ship after he kills the Albatross.

Therefore, only Option 2 accurately describes the event that occurs shortly after the Albatross's arrival: the ice cracked, allowing the ship to sail through.
