Question 281
Which of the following countries established the International African Association in 1876?
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 3:
The International African Association (Association Internationale Africaine), founded in September 1876 in Brussels, was established at the direct instigation of King Leopold II of Belgium. Although presented publicly as a society of explorers, geographers, and philanthropists dedicated to "civilizing" Central Africa and abolishing the slave trade, its true purpose was to serve as a front for Leopold II's personal colonial ambitions. This association was the preliminary step in Leopold's efforts to acquire territory in the Congo Basin, which ultimately led to the establishment of the notorious Congo Free State under his personal rule. Belgium, represented by its King, was the driving force behind its creation, funding, and direction, setting the stage for one of the most brutal chapters of European colonialism in Africa.
The incorrect option is 1:
England (or the United Kingdom) was a major colonial power with significant interests in Africa, particularly in Southern and Eastern Africa, but it did not establish the International African Association (IAA). While British explorers and philanthropists attended the 1876 Brussels Geographical Conference where the IAA was conceived, the initiative was not British. The British colonial strategy at the time focused on consolidating existing territories rather than creating a new, pan-European philanthropic organization as a prelude to acquiring the Congo.
The incorrect option is 2:
Portugal had long-standing territorial claims in Africa, particularly in Angola and Mozambique, dating back centuries. However, Portugal was not the country responsible for founding the IAA in 1876. In fact, Portugal was concerned about the potential threat the IAA posed to its claims in the region, particularly around the mouth of the Congo River. The IAA was primarily a Belgian/Leopold II initiative, not a Portuguese one.
The incorrect option is 4:
Turkey, representing the Ottoman Empire, had no significant colonial presence or direct interest in the affairs of Central Africa in 1876. The Ottoman Empire's influence was confined mainly to North Africa and the Middle East. While Turkey was a major world power, its geographical focus and political priorities were distinct from the European scramble for Central African territories, making it an entirely unrelated country to the establishment of the International African Association.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 3 (बेल्जियम):
The incorrect option is 1 (इंग्लैण्ड):
The incorrect option is 2 (पुर्तगाल):
The incorrect option is 4 (तुर्की):
Question 282
In which category has Haryana been in the "SDG India Index-3.0" report?
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2:
The SDG India Index, published by NITI Aayog, is a crucial tool for monitoring the progress of Indian states and Union Territories towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The index categorizes states based on their composite score: Aspirant (0–49), Performer (50–64), Front Runner (65–99), and Achiever (100). The specific report in question, "SDG India Index 3.0" (released in June 2021 for the reference year 2020-21), is the third edition of this index. In this report, the state of Haryana was awarded a score that placed it squarely in the Front Runner category (65–99). States in this category demonstrate strong overall progress and are very close to achieving the SDG goals, indicating successful policy implementation and significant development across multiple sectors.
The incorrect option is 1 (Achiever (100)):
The Achiever category is reserved for states that have already attained the target score of 100, meaning they have fully accomplished all the listed SDG goals. Achieving a score of 100 is exceptionally difficult and usually signals world-class performance across all 17 goals. While Haryana performed very well, achieving a score in the mid-to-high 60s, it did not reach the perfect score of 100 required for the Achiever status in the SDG India Index 3.0.
The incorrect option is 3 (Performer (50-64)):
The Performer category denotes states and UTs that are showing decent progress but still have substantial ground to cover to reach the Front Runner status. In the SDG India Index 3.0, the score of Haryana was higher than the maximum score of 64 designated for the Performer category. Therefore, classifying Haryana as a Performer would underestimate its achievements and progress in meeting the Sustainable Development Goals during the reference period.
The incorrect option is 4 (Aspirant (0-49)):
The Aspirant category is assigned to states and UTs at the beginning stage of SDG implementation, showing the lowest scores (below 50). These states require the most targeted intervention and accelerated progress to meet the 2030 targets. Haryana's performance, as reflected in its score in the SDG India Index 3.0, was significantly higher than the 0-49 range. Hence, placing Haryana in the Aspirant category is factually incorrect and misrepresents its overall development status.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2:
The incorrect option is 1:
The incorrect option is 3:
The incorrect option is 4:
Question 283
Which of the following is not an indicator of Human Development?
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
-
Per Capita Income:
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 3:
The incorrect option is 1:
(Physical Quality of Life Index) कहलाता है।
The incorrect option is 2:
The incorrect option is 4:
Question 284
Which of the following is the basis for constructing Indifference Curve (IC)?
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 4:
The basis for constructing an Indifference Curve (IC) is the Consumer preference scale. An Indifference Curve is a graphical representation of various combinations of two goods that provide the consumer with the same level of satisfaction or utility. The core assumption of indifference curve analysis is that a consumer can rank or order their preferences among different bundles of goods, which is exactly what the consumer preference scale represents. This scale is the foundation of the ordinal utility approach, where the magnitude of utility is irrelevant, but the consumer's ability to rank combinations is paramount. Therefore, the shape and position of an IC are derived entirely from the consumer's subjective tastes and preferences, illustrating combinations that yield equal utility.
The incorrect option is 1:
Consumer's Income is incorrect because while income is crucial in determining which bundles a consumer can afford, it is represented by the Budget Line, not the Indifference Curve itself. A change in income causes the Budget Line to shift parallel, indicating a change in purchasing power, but it does not change the underlying structure of the consumer's preferences, which is what the IC measures. Indifference curves are drawn assuming a given set of preferences, independent of the consumer’s income level. Thus, income affects the consumer's equilibrium (where the IC is tangent to the Budget Line) but is not the basis for the curve's construction.
The incorrect option is 2:
Absolute prices of two goods are incorrect. Similar to income, absolute prices are a component of the Budget Line, defining its exact position and intercept points on the axes. The IC is concerned only with the comparison of utility between different combinations of goods based on preference. Absolute prices indicate how much of one good must be given up to obtain a certain amount of the other good in the market, but they do not influence the consumer’s internal ranking of satisfaction.
The incorrect option is 3:
Relative prices of two goods are incorrect. Relative prices are the slope of the Budget Line, specifically representing the Market Rate of Exchange (MRE) between the two goods. While relative prices play a critical role in consumer choice and determining the point of optimal consumption, the Indifference Curve's slope is the Marginal Rate of Substitution (MRS), which is based purely on the consumer's willingness to substitute one good for another to maintain the same level of utility (preference). The IC is derived from preference, whereas relative prices are determined by market conditions.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 4:
The incorrect option is 1:
The incorrect option is 2:
The incorrect option is 3:
Question 285
What will be the elasticity of demand for a product, if it has multiple uses ?
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 1: e>1.
A product that has multiple uses, such as electricity, milk, or steel, typically has an elastic demand (e>1), meaning the percentage change in quantity demanded is greater than the percentage change in price. This phenomenon occurs because when the price of such a product falls, consumers divert its usage to minor or less important applications that they previously avoided due to the higher cost. Conversely, when the price rises, consumers quickly restrict its consumption only to the most essential uses, leading to a significant drop in overall demand. This large, responsive change in quantity demanded relative to a small price change is the defining characteristic of highly elastic demand. Therefore, the greater the number of alternative uses a commodity has, the more elastic its demand will be.
The incorrect option is 2: e<1.
This option represents inelastic demand, where the demand is relatively unresponsive to changes in price. This scenario typically applies to products with few substitutes or essential goods like common salt or life-saving medicines, which consumers continue to purchase even if the price increases significantly. Since a multi-use product allows buyers to easily switch between various applications as the price changes, its demand is highly responsive, contradicting the definition of inelastic demand.
The incorrect option is 3: e=0.
This signifies perfectly inelastic demand. This condition means that the quantity demanded remains completely unchanged regardless of any price fluctuation. This extreme form of inelasticity is theoretical and applies only to absolute necessities where no substitutes exist and the item must be purchased at any cost. A multi-use product, by its nature, offers numerous avenues for reducing consumption (by cutting out non-essential uses) when the price increases, meaning demand is certainly not fixed.
The incorrect option is 4: e=∞.
This represents perfectly elastic demand, a theoretical extreme where even a minuscule increase in price causes the quantity demanded to drop to zero, while a minuscule decrease causes demand to become infinite. This type of demand is characteristic of a firm operating under perfect competition, where the product is homogenous and substitutes are plentiful, but it is not directly related to the multiple-use characteristic in the way that e>1 is, which represents a more realistic measure of high elasticity.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 1:
The correct option is 1 (e > 1):
The incorrect option is 2 (e < 1):
The incorrect option is 3 (e = 0):
e = 0 का अर्थ है कि माँग पूर्णतः बेलोचदार है। यह स्थिति तब उत्पन्न होती है जब कीमत में किसी भी स्तर का परिवर्तन माँग की मात्रा पर शून्य प्रभाव डालता है। यह एक सैद्धांतिक स्थिति है और केवल उन अत्यंत आवश्यक वस्तुओं पर लागू होती है, जिनकी माँग को बिल्कुल भी नहीं बदला जा सकता, भले ही कीमत कुछ भी हो जाए। एक बहु-उपयोगी वस्तु के लिए, कीमत में बदलाव उसके विभिन्न उपयोगों को तुरंत प्रभावित करता है, इसलिए उसकी लोच शून्य नहीं हो सकती।
The incorrect option is 4 (e = ∞):
e = ∞ का अर्थ है कि माँग पूर्णतः लोचदार है। यह स्थिति भी एक सैद्धांतिक अवधारणा है, जो पूर्ण प्रतियोगिता बाजार में एक व्यक्तिगत फर्म के उत्पाद की माँग वक्र को दर्शाती है। इस स्थिति में, कीमत में मामूली वृद्धि भी माँग को शून्य कर देती है। बहु-उपयोगी वस्तु की माँग लोचदार होती है, लेकिन यह पूर्णतः लोचदार नहीं होती क्योंकि एक उपयोग को छोड़ने के बाद भी अन्य महत्वपूर्ण उपयोगों के लिए उसकी माँग बनी रहती है।
Question 286
Match the following:
Factor – Return
i. Labour – A. Profit
ii. Land – B. Rent
iii. Capital – C. Wage
iv. Enterpreneurship – D. Interest
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 3:
The relationship between the Factors of Production and their respective Returns is a core concept in Economics. Production requires four main factors, and each factor earns a specific reward for its contribution to the production process. The correct matching is as follows: Labour (i) receives Wage (C); Land (ii) receives Rent (B); Capital (iii) receives Interest (D); and Entrepreneurship (iv) receives Profit (A). Therefore, the correct pairing is A-iv (Profit for Entrepreneurship), B-ii (Rent for Land), C-i (Wage for Labour), and D-iii (Interest for Capital). This pairing reflects the fundamental payments made in an economy: wages compensate human effort, rent is the payment for the use of natural resources, interest is the reward for providing capital, and profit is the residual reward for risk-taking and organizational skills of the entrepreneur. This established economic model confirms that option 3 is the only match that correctly links all four factors to their appropriate forms of compensation.
The incorrect option is 1 (A-i; B-ii; C-iii; D-iv): This option incorrectly matches Labour (i) with Profit (A) and Capital (iii) with Wage (C). Labour is compensated with wages, which is the payment for physical or mental effort. Profit is the reward for the entrepreneur's risk and organization. Furthermore, this option misidentifies the return for Capital as Wage, when Capital is correctly compensated by Interest (D). While it correctly links Land (ii) with Rent (B) and Entrepreneurship (iv) with Interest (D), the critical mismatches for Labour and Capital make this option invalid under standard economic principles of factor returns.
The incorrect option is 2 (A-iv; B-iii; C-ii; D-i): This option makes fundamental errors in matching the factors and returns. It correctly identifies Entrepreneurship with Profit (A-iv) but incorrectly pairs Land (ii) with Wage (C). Land, being a natural resource, earns Rent (B), not Wage, which is reserved for Labour. It also mistakenly pairs Capital (iii) with Rent (B) and Labour (i) with Interest (D). Capital earns Interest (D) as the cost of borrowing funds, and Labour earns Wage (C). Due to the improper allocation of Rent, Wage, and Interest among Land, Labour, and Capital, this choice is incorrect.
The incorrect option is 4 (A-i; B-iii; C-ii; D-iv): This option is flawed because it repeats the error of linking Labour (i) to Profit (A), when the return for Labour must be Wage (C). Additionally, it matches Land (ii) with Wage (C) and Capital (iii) with Rent (B). Land's return is Rent (B) and Capital's return is Interest (D). The return for Labour is Wage (C), and the return for Entrepreneurship is Profit (A). Since multiple returns are assigned to the wrong factors, specifically misallocating Profit, Wage, and Rent, this option does not represent the accepted structure of factor returns in Economics.
i. श्रम – A. लाभ
ii. भूमि – B. लगान
iii. पूँजी – C. मजदूरी
iv. उद्यमशीलता – D. ब्याज
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
इस प्रकार, सही क्रम i-C, ii-B, iii-D, iv-A है, जो Option 3 (A-iv; B-ii; C-i; D-iii) में दर्शाया गया है।]
(A-i; B-ii; C-iii; D-iv):
(A-iv; B-iii; C-ii; D-i):
(A-i; B-iii; C-ii; D-iv):
Question 287
Which is the first private sector train of India?
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2:
The correct option is 2: Tejas Express.
The Tejas Express is recognized as the first train in India to be fully operated by a private entity, specifically the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), which functions as a subsidiary of the Indian Railways but operates the Tejas train on a commercial and private model. The first Tejas Express to run on this model was the Lucknow-New Delhi Tejas Express, which commenced operations in October 2019. Its introduction marked a significant move towards increasing private participation in the operation and management of railway services in India, aiming for improved passenger amenities and services akin to airline standards. These trains boast modern features, dynamic pricing, and revenue management models distinct from traditionally run Indian Railways trains.
The incorrect option is 1: Vande Bharat.
The Vande Bharat Express, also known as Train 18, is a highly significant and modern semi-high-speed train, but it is not India's first private sector train. It is designed, manufactured, and operated entirely under the ownership of the Ministry of Railways, Indian Railways. The Vande Bharat project represents the government's push for indigenous, world-class train technology and operations, not a privatization venture. While Vande Bharat trains offer premium services, they are managed and operated by the governmental Indian Railways organization, distinguishing them from the privately-operated Tejas Express.
The incorrect option is 3: Gareeb Rath.
Gareeb Rath translates to "Chariot of the Poor" and was introduced by Indian Railways to provide air-conditioned travel at low fares for the masses. These trains are exclusively operated and managed by the governmental Indian Railways. They were never conceptualized or operated under a private sector model; their entire purpose is to provide subsidized, affordable transportation, making them a direct contrast to a private sector venture focused on commercial profitability.
The incorrect option is 4: Rajdhani Express.
The Rajdhani Express is one of the premier series of trains operated by Indian Railways, connecting the national capital (New Delhi) to the capitals of various states. Since their inception, Rajdhani Express trains have been entirely state-owned and state-operated. They represent the traditional, long-standing operational model of the Indian Railway system, functioning as a fully government-controlled service and thus do not fall under the definition of a private sector train.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2:
The correct option is 2:
The incorrect option is 1:
The incorrect option is 3:
The incorrect option is 4:
Question 288
From Column-I and Column-II, choose the correct pair :
Column-I – Column-II
A. Measurement of NI by Dadabhai Naoroji – (i) 1917-18
B. Establishment of CSO – (ii) 1948
C. New Economic Policy – (iii) 1951
D. CACP – (iv) 1965
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 4:
The correct pair is D. CACP – (iv) 1965. CACP stands for the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices. This statutory body was established by the Government of India in 1965. Its primary function is to recommend Minimum Support Prices (MSPs) for various mandated crops to the government. The establishment of CACP was a crucial step in formalizing agricultural policy, especially preceding the Green Revolution, ensuring fair prices for farmers and promoting efficient land use patterns. Therefore, matching D with (iv) is historically accurate and represents the correct pairing.
The incorrect option is 1 (A-i):
This option pairs A. Measurement of NI by Dadabhai Naoroji with (i) 1917-18. This is incorrect because Dadabhai Naoroji, often called the "Grand Old Man of India," conducted his pioneering estimation of India's National Income (NI) much earlier, specifically in 1867-68, which he published in his famous book, Poverty and Un-British Rule in India. The date 1917-18 is associated with later estimates by others like V.K.R.V. Rao, not Dadabhai Naoroji's initial work. His estimate was a foundational piece of economic critique against British rule.
The incorrect option is 2 (B-ii):
This option pairs B. Establishment of CSO with (ii) 1948. This is incorrect because the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO), now part of the National Statistical Office (NSO), was officially established in 1951, not 1948. The CSO was set up by the Government of India to coordinate statistical activities and is responsible for the computation of National Income and other macro-economic indicators. While post-independence efforts to standardize statistics began earlier, the formal establishment date of the CSO is 1951.
The incorrect option is 3 (C-iii):
This option pairs C. New Economic Policy with (iii) 1951. This is incorrect. The New Economic Policy (NEP) in the context of Indian economy refers to the sweeping economic reforms of Liberalisation, Privatisation, and Globalisation (LPG) implemented in 1991 under Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao and Finance Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. The year 1951 is historically significant for the launch of India's First Five-Year Plan, marking the beginning of centralized economic planning, but it is not the year of the NEP.
कॉलम-I – कॉलम-II
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 4:
(Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices - CACP)
The incorrect option is 1:
The incorrect option is 2:
The incorrect option is 3:
Question 289
Which of the following is/are issued by the RBI and acts as legal tender money ?
(A): Demand deposits
(B): Coins of all denomination
(C): Currency notes of various denominations, except one rupee note
(D): One rupee currency notes
Choose the correct option:
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 3:
Currency notes of various denominations, except the one rupee note, are issued exclusively by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) under the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934, and function as legal tender money. The RBI is India's sole monetary authority responsible for the issue of currency notes (excluding the one rupee note) to ensure the stability of the monetary system. As legal tender, these notes must be accepted by law in India for all monetary transactions, including the settlement of debts. This power of issue is central to the RBI's function as the central bank. Therefore, only statement (C) correctly identifies the money issued and circulated by the RBI as legal tender.
The incorrect option is 1: Only (A) and (C) are correct
Demand deposits, while acting as a form of money (bank money or fiduciary money) and being a medium of exchange, are not issued by the RBI; they are created by commercial banks when individuals deposit money or take loans. Furthermore, demand deposits are not considered legal tender because a person is not legally compelled to accept a cheque or draft as payment; acceptance is based on trust. While demand deposits facilitate transactions, they fail the criteria of being both issued by the RBI and acting as legal tender, making option (A) incorrect.
The incorrect option is 2: Only (B) and (C) are correct
Coins of all denominations are indeed legal tender, but they are not issued by the RBI. According to the Coinage Act, 2011, coins in India are issued by the Government of India (specifically the Ministry of Finance). The RBI merely acts as the agent for distributing these coins. Therefore, statement (B) fails the crucial requirement that the money must be issued by the RBI.
The incorrect option is 4: Only (D) is correct
The one rupee currency note is the only paper currency in India that is issued directly by the Government of India (Ministry of Finance), not the Reserve Bank of India. It bears the signature of the Finance Secretary, not the RBI Governor, differentiating it from all other currency notes (₹2 and above). Although the one rupee note is legal tender, statement (D) is incorrect because it is not issued by the RBI.
(A) माँग जमाएँ
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
Question 290
I – 1000 – 800 – (i)
II – 800 – (ii) – 160
III – (iii) – 512 – (iv)
IV – 512 – 409.6 – 102.4
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 3:
चरण I: * जमाएँ = 1000
The incorrect option is 1:
The incorrect option is 2:
The incorrect option is 4:
Question 291
How many Nationalized Banks are there, in India (September, 2023) ?
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 3:
The number of Public Sector Banks (often referred to as Nationalized Banks) in India was reduced to 12 following a major consolidation plan implemented by the Government of India, effective from April 1, 2020. This significant rationalization involved the merger of ten public sector banks into four larger entities. Before this round of mergers, the count stood at 18 Public Sector Banks. The core objective of this strategic consolidation was to create fewer, stronger, and globally competitive banks, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen the banking sector's balance sheet to meet increasing credit demands. As of September 2023, this structure of 12 Public Sector Banks remains the current and correct count.
The incorrect option is 1 (8):
The figure 8 is incorrect because it reflects a number lower than the current count of nationalized banks. The recent mergers in 2020 resulted in 12 anchor banks. A count of 8 would represent a further drastic reduction that has not taken place as of September 2023. While the government's long-term goal might involve more consolidation, that policy has not been implemented yet to bring the count down to 8. Therefore, selecting 8 misrepresents the current structure of the Indian public sector banking system.
The incorrect option is 2 (10):
The number 10 is factually incorrect for the current structure. While the 2020 mega-merger scheme was based on merging ten banks into four, the final number of consolidated Public Sector Banks remaining in operation after the process was 12, not 10. The figure 10 might confuse students who recall the announcement of 10 banks being merged, but fail to remember the resultant total number of entities. The total count was finalized at 12 strong public sector banks.
The incorrect option is 4 (14):
The figure 14 is incorrect as it is higher than the current tally of 12 banks. This number could represent a count from a specific period immediately after some earlier rounds of consolidation, but before the comprehensive 2020 mega-merger. For instance, after the merger of Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank with Bank of Baroda, the count was higher, but the 2020 mergers brought the total down to 12. Therefore, 14 does not reflect the structural reality of the public sector banking landscape as of September 2023.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 3:
The incorrect option is 1:
The incorrect option is 2:
The incorrect option is 4:
Question 292
Identify the apex institution for rural financing in India :
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2:
The correct option is 2:
[NABARD is the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development. Established on July 12, 1982, based on the recommendations of the B. Sivaraman Committee, NABARD serves as the apex development bank in India for all matters concerning policy, planning, and operations in the field of credit for agriculture and other economic activities in rural areas. Its core mandate is to facilitate credit flow for promoting sustainable and equitable agriculture and rural prosperity. It acts as a refinancing agency for institutions providing finance to rural sectors, such as Cooperative Banks, Regional Rural Banks (RRBs), and Commercial Banks, making it the highest authority (apex institution) for rural financing.]
The incorrect option is 1:
[IDBI stands for the Industrial Development Bank of India. Its primary focus is industrial financing and development, especially by providing long-term loans to the manufacturing and infrastructure sectors. While it contributes to the overall economy, it is specifically an apex institution for industrial credit, not rural or agricultural financing. Therefore, IDBI does not hold the apex position in the hierarchy of institutions dedicated to rural credit in India.]
The incorrect option is 3:
[SIDBI is the Small Industries Development Bank of India. As its name suggests, SIDBI is the principal financial institution for the promotion, financing, and development of the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector in India. Its operations are centered around urban and semi-urban industrial growth and providing capital to small businesses, which is distinct from the mission of providing apex-level credit and development support exclusively to the rural sector.]
The incorrect option is 4:
[HSCARDBL is likely a non-existent or localized financial body and not a nationally recognized apex institution in the context of all-India rural financing. While various cooperative banks (like State Cooperative Agriculture and Rural Development Banks) exist, no institution with the acronym HSCARDBL is designated as the apex national institution for rural credit in the same vein as NABARD. The question asks for the "apex institution" for rural financing in India, a designation reserved for the organization established by an act of Parliament for this specific purpose.]
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2:
The incorrect option is 1:
The incorrect option is 3:
The incorrect option is 4:
Question 293
Find the missing figures in given example of credit creation and choose the correct option :
Round – Deposits – Loans (80%) – Reserve Ratio (20%)
I – 1000 – 800 – (i)
II – 800 – (ii) – 160
III – (iii) – 512 – (iv)
IV – 512 – 409.6 – 102.4
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 3:
This question demonstrates the process of credit creation by commercial banks, assuming a Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) of 20% (Reserve Ratio) and a Loan ratio of 80%. Credit creation begins with an initial primary deposit, and subsequent rounds of deposits are generated from the loans given out in the previous round.
Let's calculate the missing figures:
Round I:
Deposits = 1000
Loans (80%) = 800
Reserve Ratio (20%) (i) = 20% of 1000 = 200.
Round II:
Deposits = 800 (which is the loan from Round I)
Loans (80%) (ii) = 80% of 800 = 640.
Reserve Ratio (20%) = 160.
Round III:
Deposits (iii) = The loan from Round II = 640.
Loans (80%) = 512.
Reserve Ratio (20%) (iv) = 20% of 640 = 128.
Therefore, the missing figures are: (i)-200; (ii)-640; (iii)-640; (iv)-128, which corresponds to Option 3.
The incorrect option is 1:
This option incorrectly states (iii) as 580 and (iv) as 68. If (iii) were 580, it would mean the bank only lent 580 from the 800 deposit in Round II, which violates the 80% loan ratio (80% of 800 is 640). Also, if (iii) were 580, the reserve ratio (iv) must be 20% of 580, which is 116, not 68. The initial calculation for (i) is correct (200), and (ii) is correct (640), but the figures for Round III are wrong.
The incorrect option is 2:
This option incorrectly states (ii) as 580 and (iii) as 580. The loan amount in Round II, (ii), must be 80% of the deposit of 800, which is 640, not 580. Since the deposit in Round III, (iii), is based on the loan from Round II, it should also be 640, not 580. The value for (iv) is also incorrect based on the reserve ratio calculation of 20% of 580.
The incorrect option is 4:
This option incorrectly states (ii) as 580. As established, the loan amount in Round II, (ii), must be 80% of 800, which is 640. While (i), (iii), and (iv) are calculated correctly in this option, the error in (ii) invalidates this choice. In credit creation, loans determine the next round's deposits, making the correct calculation of (ii) essential for the whole process.
Question 294
When there is no work to do on farms, people go to urban areas to look for jobs. This kind of unemployment is known as :
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 3: Seasonal unemployment.
Seasonal unemployment occurs when people are unemployed at specific times of the year because of the seasonal nature of their work. Agriculture in India, for example, is highly dependent on specific planting, harvesting, and sowing seasons. When the busy agricultural season ends (e.g., after the harvest), farm laborers have no work to do on the land for several months. During this "off-season," these workers migrate to urban areas to find alternative employment, such as daily wage labor in construction or small industries. This pattern is the very definition of seasonal unemployment, as the joblessness is predictable and tied directly to the annual cycle of their primary economic activity.
The incorrect option is 1: Structural unemployment.
Structural unemployment arises from a mismatch between the skills workers possess and the skills required by the available jobs, or due to fundamental, long-term changes in the economy, like the decline of an industry (e.g., factory workers losing jobs due to automation). This type of unemployment is chronic and deep-rooted, lasting for a long period until workers retrain or the economy restructures. It is not tied to the annual calendar or specific seasons, but rather to a permanent change in the structure of the economy. The movement of farm workers during the lean season is a temporary phenomenon, not a result of a long-term economic shift or skill mismatch.
The incorrect option is 2: Disguised unemployment.
Disguised unemployment, also known as underemployment, refers to a situation where more people are employed in a job than are actually needed to produce the output. In this case, even if some workers are removed, the total production remains unchanged. This is very common in agriculture, where family members often work together on a small plot of land. However, the question describes a situation where people have "no work to do" and migrate; this is overt unemployment. Disguised unemployment means they are working but contributing nothing extra, whereas seasonal unemployment means they are actively jobless during the non-farming period.
The incorrect option is 4: Cyclical unemployment.
Cyclical unemployment is caused by fluctuations in the business cycle—that is, it rises during economic recessions or depressions when aggregate demand falls, and falls during periods of economic boom. In a recession, businesses cut production and lay off workers across various sectors. The unemployment described in the question is localized to the agricultural sector and is a result of yearly weather and farming patterns, not a widespread decline in the national or global economy. Therefore, it is unrelated to the cyclical ups and downs of the market economy.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
Question 295
Arrange the food security related programs in India in chronological order:
A. Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS)
B. Antyodaya Anna Yojana
C. Integrated Food Security Scheme
D. Food Security Act
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2:
The correct chronological order of the food security programs is A, B, D, C. To arrive at this sequence, we must recall the initiation years of these major government interventions.
Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS) (A) was launched first in June 1997. This marked a major shift from the universal PDS to a system focused on the poor (Below Poverty Line) and non-poor (Above Poverty Line).
Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) (B) followed, launched on December 25, 2000. This scheme was specifically aimed at providing highly subsidized food grains to the poorest of the poor households, building upon the framework of TPDS.
The National Food Security Act (NFSA) (D) came much later, being signed into law in September 2013. This Act institutionalized the right to food as a legal entitlement, converting many existing food security programs into legal rights for beneficiaries.
Finally, the Integrated Food Security Scheme (C), also known by its new name Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY), has its roots in 2020 but the term "Integrated Food Security Scheme" itself refers to the revamped, free-of-cost distribution of food grains under NFSA starting January 1, 2023, making it the most recent in implementation changes compared to the others on the list. Therefore, the sequence is A (1997), B (2000), D (2013), C (2023).
The incorrect option is 1 (A B C D): This sequence places the Integrated Food Security Scheme (C) directly after Antyodaya Anna Yojana (B) (2000). This is incorrect because the NFSA (D) was enacted in 2013, which is a decade before the official implementation of the Integrated Food Security Scheme (C) in its modern, streamlined form in 2023. This sequence fails to recognize the legislative milestone (D) that precedes the final integrated program (C).
The incorrect option is 3 (D C A B): This sequence is chronologically inaccurate as it places the latest programs, Food Security Act (D) (2013) and Integrated Food Security Scheme (C) (2023), at the beginning. The programs A (1997) and B (2000), which formed the foundation of targeted PDS, were introduced long before the comprehensive legal framework (D) was put in place.
The incorrect option is 4 (B A C D): This sequence incorrectly places Antyodaya Anna Yojana (B) (2000) before the Targeted Public Distribution System (A) (1997). TPDS (A) was an essential precursor that introduced the concept of targeting the poor, upon which AAY (B) was later developed to serve the 'poorest of the poor' section of the BPL category. Placing B before A fundamentally misrepresents the evolution of India's PDS.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
सही विकल्प (2) है: A B D C
इस प्रकार, सही काल-क्रम A (1997) -> B (2000) -> D (2013) -> C (2023) है, जो विकल्प (2) A B D C को सही बनाता है।
Question 296
Consider the following statements :
(I) WTO (1995) was established on the basis of Dunkal proposal in place of GATT (1947).
(II) WTO has been established on the basis of an international treaty approved by the parliaments of the member countries.
Choose the correct option:
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 3: Both (I) and (II) are correct.
The correct option is 3:
Both statements (I) and (II) accurately describe the establishment and nature of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The foundation of the WTO lies in the successful completion of the Uruguay Round of trade negotiations, which spanned from 1986 to 1994. Statement (I) is correct because the final comprehensive agreement, known as the Marrakesh Agreement, was based on the "Dunkel Draft" proposed by Arthur Dunkel, the Director-General of the GATT at the time. This proposal transformed the temporary framework of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT 1947) into a permanent, institutionalized body, the WTO, which formally began operating in 1995. Statement (II) is also correct because the WTO is fundamentally an international organization governed by treaties. The Marrakesh Agreement Establishing the WTO, along with its annexed agreements, is a binding international treaty. For these treaties to take effect in any member nation, they must first undergo the process of ratification and approval by the respective country's parliament or legislative body, thereby giving the WTO its formal legal status in the international system.
The incorrect option is 1: Only (I) is correct.
This option is incorrect because, while statement (I) is factually accurate regarding the historical transition from GATT to WTO via the Dunkel proposal, statement (II) is equally correct and essential to understanding the WTO's structure. The WTO is not a mere agreement like GATT; it is a permanent body created by an international convention. Every major international treaty, especially one governing global commerce, requires domestic legislative approval (parliamentary ratification) from its sovereign member states to ensure compliance and constitutional adherence. Thus, ignoring statement (II) provides an incomplete picture of the organization's legal foundation.
The incorrect option is 2: Only (II) is correct.
This option is incorrect as it dismisses the historical and conceptual precursor to the WTO. Statement (I) provides the crucial context for the organization's creation: the WTO was indeed established in 1995 to succeed GATT, and the detailed framework for this transition came directly from the Dunkel Draft. Without the eight years of negotiations culminating in the Dunkel proposals under the GATT system, the international treaty (Marrakesh Agreement) mentioned in statement (II) would not have existed. Therefore, both the foundational draft (Dunkel proposal) and the required legal framework (international treaty approved by parliaments) are necessary facts.
The incorrect option is 4: Both (I) and (II) are wrong.
This option is entirely incorrect because both statements are historically and legally accurate. The establishment of the WTO in 1995 was the most significant outcome of the Uruguay Round, replacing the GATT. This transition was architected by the proposals laid out by Arthur Dunkel. Furthermore, the WTO's establishment as an international body, in contrast to the GATT's status as a provisional agreement, mandated that the foundational treaty be fully ratified by the national legislatures of all contracting parties, making both statements correct.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
(GATT - General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade)
Question 297
What is the National Consumer Helpline (NCH) Number with the 'Jaago Grahak Jaago' motto ?
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 4:
The National Consumer Helpline (NCH) operates under the Department of Consumer Affairs, Government of India, and is famously associated with the campaign and slogan "Jaago Grahak Jaago" (Wake up Consumer, Wake up). This motto is intended to spread awareness about consumer rights and encourage citizens to seek redressal for their grievances. The official consumer helpline number is a toll-free service meant to facilitate the registration and monitoring of consumer complaints. While the NCH introduced an initial toll-free number, the primary and most standardized number that has been promoted under the "Jaago Grahak Jaago" campaign for centralized grievance redressal is 1915. This number serves as a critical point of contact for consumers seeking guidance or registration of complaints across various sectors.
The incorrect option is 1:
The number 1800-3000-145 is also associated with consumer protection, as the NCH previously utilized the toll-free number 1800-11-4000. However, the exact combination of numbers presented in Option 1 is not the currently promoted or universally recognized NCH number linked to the national campaign; the more recent and often cited number, particularly in government communications, is 1915.
The incorrect option is 2:
1857 is historically significant in the context of Indian history, as it marks the year of the First War of Independence (The Sepoy Mutiny). This year is entirely unrelated to modern consumer protection initiatives or the 'Jaago Grahak Jaago' campaign, which is a recent development under the Consumer Protection Act. Therefore, 1857 cannot be the National Consumer Helpline number.
The incorrect option is 3:
2014 is a year, not a functional helpline number, and it has no specific direct connection to the National Consumer Helpline as a contact method. While significant government schemes and policies may have been launched in that year, a four-digit year number is not structured to be a dedicated consumer assistance hotline.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
Question 298
Who wrote the Lucy Poems?
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2:
The correct option is 2:
William Wordsworth is famously known as the author of the "Lucy Poems," a sequence of five celebrated poems composed between 1798 and 1801, mostly during his stay in Germany. These poems—"Strange fits of passion have I known," "She dwelt among the untrodden ways," "I travelled among unknown men," "Three years she grew in sun and shower," and "A slumber did my spirit seal"—are central to the Romantic Movement and feature a character named Lucy, whose identity remains mysterious, often interpreted as an idealization of nature, a lost love, or a symbol of mortality and natural beauty. The poems are distinct for their profound simplicity, their focus on the sublime relationship between nature and humanity, and their exploration of themes such as loss, innocence, and death, which elevate Lucy's tragic fate into a universal meditation on the fleeting nature of life and the solace found in the natural world. These works were pioneering examples of the deep lyrical power and emotional depth that characterized Wordsworth's contribution to English poetry, particularly his collaboration with Samuel Taylor Coleridge in Lyrical Ballads.
The incorrect options are:
The incorrect option is 1:
William Shakespeare is the pre-eminent English playwright and poet of the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras, known primarily for his 39 plays (like Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet) and his 154 sonnets. His literary period predates the Romantic Movement by approximately two centuries, and his body of work does not include the specific sequence known as the "Lucy Poems." Shakespeare's focus was largely on drama, historical events, and complex human psychology, placing him in a completely different literary context than Wordsworth.
The incorrect option is 3:
Douglas James is not a recognized author associated with the major canons of English Romantic poetry or the specific "Lucy Poems." While many individuals share this name, none are credited with authoring a major work like the "Lucy Poems," which is firmly established within the works of William Wordsworth. This option is irrelevant to the question of 18th-century English literature and the Romantic Movement.
The incorrect option is 4:
Gieve Patel is a contemporary Indian poet, playwright, and painter, primarily writing in English, whose work is situated in the post-colonial literary tradition, focusing often on themes of urban life and social critique in India. His career and poetic style are completely separated by time, geography, and subject matter from the English Romantic movement. He did not write any of the poems known as the "Lucy Poems."

The correct option is 1:
The poem 'A House, A Home' is penned by Lorraine M. Walli.
This poem is a classic piece of elementary literature, often included in school curricula to teach children about the profound difference between a mere physical structure and a nurturing, emotionally connected living space. A "house" is defined by Walli as a non-living entity—it has bricks, stones, wood, and physical elements like eaves, chimneys, and floors. In contrast, a "home," as Walli beautifully articulates, is where love, unselfish acts, kindness, family, and understanding reside. The essence of the poem lies in the distinction that while a house is built with materials, a home is built with relationships and emotions. Lorraine M. Walli’s work focuses on these conceptual themes, emphasizing the emotional labor and relationships that transform a property into a sanctuary. Recognizing Walli as the author is a fundamental literary fact essential for students studying this particular poem.
The incorrect option is 2:
Harry Behn is an American writer known primarily for his children's books and poetry. While he wrote many popular poems like 'The Little Turtle' and 'The Willow Cats,' he is not credited with authoring 'A House, A Home.' His works generally focus on nature, simple childhood wonders, and imaginative concepts, rather than the thematic distinction between physical structure and familial emotion found in Walli’s poem.
The incorrect option is 3:

She is renowned for her works, such as I Am a Pueblo Indian Girl, which offer cultural insights and authentic depictions of Native American life. E-Yeh-Shure’s literary contributions are distinct from the specific conceptual poetry of 'A House, A Home,' and she did not write this particular piece.
The incorrect option is 4:
Peter Dixon is an English writer, critic, and academic, often associated with scholarly works and adaptations of plays rather than well-known primary source poems for children's literature like 'A House, A Home.' He is known for editing and translating classic works and his focus is generally within the academic study of literature, making him an incorrect choice for the authorship of this specific poem.

Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 1:
William Butler Yeats is universally recognized as the Irish National poet. Born in Dublin in 1865, Yeats was a central figure in the Irish Literary Revival, a movement that sought to promote a sense of Irish cultural identity through literature, myth, and folklore. His work is deeply intertwined with the history, politics, and landscapes of Ireland, transitioning from the lyrical, romantic style of his early career to a more dramatic, symbolic, and modernist voice in his later years. Yeats co-founded the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, which became crucial in fostering indigenous Irish drama, and his poetry and plays drew extensively from Irish legend and heroic history, such as the tales of Cuchulain. By exploring themes of Irish nationalism, political turmoil, cultural heritage, and the Anglo-Irish relationship, Yeats not only defined modern Irish poetry but also contributed significantly to the nation's self-image. His commitment to establishing a distinctly Irish voice in world literature culminated in him being awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1923, solidifying his status as Ireland's foremost literary figure and national poet.
The incorrect option is 2:
