Question 41
Maharaja School of Art and Craft (Madarsa-a-hunari) was founded by:
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 1:
Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II is correctly identified as the founder and the principal patron of the institution originally named Madarsa-a-hunari. Established in 1857, the school's primary objective was to preserve and promote the indigenous arts, crafts, and industrial design of the Jaipur state, following the example of other art schools being set up in British India. Sawai Ram Singh II was a progressive ruler known for his passion for arts, photography, and urban development, ensuring the school received significant royal support and flourished during the mid-19th century. The institution remains functional today as the Government Art School, Jaipur, a testament to his vision of blending traditional Rajasthani craftsmanship with modern educational practices.
The incorrect option is 2:
Maharaja Jai Singh, more specifically Sawai Jai Singh II, was one of Jaipur's most significant rulers, but he lived much earlier than the school's founding. He reigned from 1699 to 1743 and is famously known as the founder of the city of Jaipur itself and for commissioning the astronomical observatories, the Jantar Mantars. His reign predates the establishment of the Maharaja School of Art and Craft by over a century, as it was founded in 1857, making him historically too early to be the founder. While he was a patron of learning and architecture, this specific art school was not his creation.
The incorrect option is 3:
Maharaja Man Singh I's tenure as a ruler of Amber (not yet Jaipur) was during the height of the Mughal Empire, from 1589 to 1614. He was a celebrated general of Emperor Akbar, and his era is far too early in history to be associated with the founding of this institution. The establishment of formal art schools in India, like the Madarsa-a-hunari, was a phenomenon of the 19th century, often influenced by British colonial policy and the need for industrial design training.
The incorrect option is 4:
Maharaja Prithvi Singh's connection to the school's founding is historically unfounded. There were multiple rulers by this name in the lineage. For instance, Prithvi Singh II of Jaipur had a very brief reign around the 1770s, which is still too early. The Madarsa-a-hunari was a significant educational development of the mid-19th century, a time when Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II was actively ruling and modernising the state.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 1:
The incorrect option is 2:
The incorrect option is 3:
The incorrect option is 4:
Question 42
In Jaipur school more than 50 artists were employed in Suratkhana during the period of :
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 4:
Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh's reign (1778–1803 CE) is widely regarded as the golden age of the Jaipur School of painting. During this period, the royal painting workshop, known as the Suratkhana, flourished due to his personal and lavish patronage, employing over 50 master artists and their assistants simultaneously. Pratap Singh was an accomplished poet and a devout patron of the Krishna cult, inspiring an enormous volume of artwork dedicated to religious themes like the Gita Govinda and Ragamala. The sheer scale of the artistic output, combined with the large number of artists required for continuous production of his personal portraits, large court scenes, and monumental religious series, solidifies his era as the peak employment period for the Suratkhana.
The incorrect option is 1:
Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II (1699–1743 CE) was the visionary founder of the city of Jaipur and the first to establish the official Suratkhana in his new capital. While he laid the crucial foundation for the Jaipur style, the art atelier's operation was in its nascent phase during his period. The number of artists, though significant for the time, was primarily focused on initial court documentation and astronomical works, and had not yet expanded to the immense scale of over 50 specialists seen under Pratap Singh's later rule. His contribution was institutionalizing the art, not maximizing the artist workforce.
The incorrect option is 2:
Maharaja Sawai Prithvi Singh II had a comparatively brief reign (1768–1778 CE), which followed a period of political turmoil. While art production continued in the court tradition, his short tenure was not a period of massive, sustained artistic expansion. It was a transitional phase between the patronage of Madho Singh and the eventual peak reached by his younger brother, Pratap Singh. There is no historical evidence that the Suratkhana experienced its highest employment figures during this decade.
The incorrect option is 3:
Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh I (1751–1768 CE) was a great patron who commissioned large, detailed portraits and magnificent processions, which marked a new phase of the Jaipur style. He certainly maintained and supported the Suratkhana, commissioning important works, but historical records and the volume of work show that the ultimate height of the workshop's employment and production capacity was not achieved until the following reign of his son, Pratap Singh. Pratap Singh's religious focus and subsequent demand for continuous art series required the highest number of employed artists.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 4:
The incorrect option is 1:
The incorrect option is 2:
The incorrect option is 3:
Question 43
"Pandit Seau" and his two sons "Manku" and "Nainsukh" belong to :
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2:
Pandit Seu and his two sons, Manaku and Nainsukh, are rightly regarded as the founding figures of the highly influential Guler school of Pahari miniature painting. Pandit Seu established his family atelier in the hill-state of Guler around the beginning of the 18th century under the patronage of Raja Dalip Singh. Their importance lies in pioneering a revolutionary stylistic shift, bringing the naturalism and refinement of the late-Mughal style into the hills. This new artistic direction, which moved away from the bold and expressive Basohli style, is specifically identified by art historians as the Guler Kalam, or the Pre-Kangra phase, firmly rooting the family's artistic identity in this state.
The incorrect option is 1:
Kangra is closely related to the Guler school, but it represents the subsequent, fully mature phase of this new style. The delicate and lyrical Guler style, developed by Nainsukh, was later transplanted and flourished in the neighboring state of Kangra under the great patron Raja Sansar Chand. Kangra is therefore the successor, often called the 'child' of the Guler school, not the home state of the original father-and-sons trio who initially defined the style.
The incorrect option is 3:
Basohli is recognized as the earliest school of Pahari painting, characterized by a distinctly bold, highly-colored, and emotionally dramatic style, which is conceptually different from the Guler school. While the Seu family's early works show some of the influence of the prevalent Basohli tradition, their key contribution was to actively transform this idiom by introducing Mughal-inspired naturalism and subdued elegance. Basohli represents the style that Guler painters deliberately evolved away from, not the school they belonged to.
The incorrect option is 4:
Chamba is another distinct, but less centrally influential, hill-state center of Pahari painting. Although the extensive Seu family workshop, which included the sons and grandsons of Manaku and Nainsukh, eventually dispersed to various Pahari states, including Chamba, Nurpur, and Mandi, the core family unit and the foundational Guler style were established long before this dispersal. Chamba was merely one of the many courts that later adopted the Guler-derived style.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2:
The incorrect option is 1:
The incorrect option is 3:
The incorrect option is 4:
Question 44
In 1916, the first scientific distribution of Rajasthani painting was done by:
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 4:
Anand Coomaraswamy. In the annals of Indian art history, Dr. Ananda Kentish Coomaraswamy (A.K. Coomaraswamy) is rightly credited with the first scientific and scholarly classification of what is now known as Rajasthani painting. His 1916 publication, an essay titled "Rajput Painting," was a landmark event that fundamentally reshaped the understanding of Indian miniatures. Prior to his work, all miniatures outside of the Imperial Mughal atelier were loosely and often incorrectly grouped together; Coomaraswamy was the first to assert that the vibrant, spiritual, and indigenous paintings from the courts of Rajasthan and the Punjab Hills (Pahari) were a distinct, non-Mughal school. This 'scientific distribution' established the term 'Rajput Painting' as a formal category, based on patronage (Rajput courts), theme (primarily Hindu devotion and love poetry), and style (bold colours, expressive lines), thereby laying the theoretical foundation for all subsequent studies in the field.
The incorrect option is 1:
W. G. Archer. Although W. G. Archer was a formidable British art historian who greatly contributed to the study of Indian miniatures, especially Pahari painting, his primary research and publications came much later in the mid-20th century. Archer’s influential works, such as Indian Paintings from the Punjab Hills, involved a detailed categorization of the different Pahari sub-schools (e.g., Kangra, Guler, Basohli). He was instrumental in refining the classifications but was building upon the foundational work that Coomaraswamy had already established decades earlier in 1916. Therefore, he was a major researcher in the field, not the initial classifier.
The incorrect option is 2:
M. S. Randhawa. Dr. Mohinder Singh Randhawa was an eminent Indian art historian and administrator whose scholarship focused almost exclusively on the documentation and interpretation of Pahari paintings, particularly those of the Kangra and Basohli schools. His well-known books, which often focused on specific series like the Gita Govinda or Ragamala paintings, were published from the 1950s onwards. Randhawa's efforts significantly enhanced our knowledge of the subject matter and stylistic elements of Pahari art through detailed visual documentation. However, his significant contributions to connoisseurship and thematic studies were made well after the initial, crucial scientific categorization performed in 1916.
The incorrect option is 3:
J. C. French. J. C. French was an early 20th-century British enthusiast and traveller who was instrumental in bringing many Pahari paintings to light in the West. He undertook extensive tours of the Himalayan hill states and his 1931 book, Himalayan Art, provided valuable field notes and illustrations of the region's art. While French helped create awareness and provided documentary evidence of these painting schools, his work was more of an exploratory and descriptive nature. He lacked the theoretical and analytical framework of Coomaraswamy, and his contribution to the formal, scientific classification of the entire Rajasthani painting school did not precede the 1916 milestone.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 4:
The incorrect option is 1:
The incorrect option is 2:
The incorrect option is 3:
Question 45
Lines which depict Motion, Excitement, Agitation, Dramatism and Restlessness are called:
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2:
Diagonal lines are the classical element of art used to depict movement, instability, and dramatic tension. Unlike their stable counterparts, diagonal lines are neither parallel nor perpendicular to the ground, which psychologically creates a feeling of imbalance and potential energy. Because any object resting on a diagonal line is perceived as either falling or actively moving, the use of this line type in a composition immediately infuses the artwork with a sense of kinetic energy, agitation, excitement, and emotional restlessness. Artists strategically employ them to guide the viewer’s eye quickly through the work and to heighten the emotional drama of a scene.
The incorrect option is 1:
An Angular Line is created by the sharp joining of two or more straight lines, often including diagonal segments. While these lines contribute to a feeling of jaggedness, conflict, and sudden tension, the term is less precise than 'Diagonal Line' for the general depiction of movement and unrest. Angular lines imply abrupt changes in direction, which is different from the continuous, active motion implied by a pure diagonal line.
The incorrect option is 3:
Radial Lines are a specific arrangement of lines that all emanate outwards from a single, common center point. Their primary artistic function is to forcefully draw the viewer's attention to that central focal point, emphasizing a burst of energy or a point of concentration. Although they certainly involve energy, this energy is controlled and centralized, not the generalized feeling of instability and aimless restlessness described in the question.
The incorrect option is 4:
Horizontal Lines, in contrast to diagonal lines, are completely restful and stable. As they run parallel to the ground or the horizon, they convey a feeling of repose, calm, peace, and permanence. They are often used to suggest sleep, stillness, or the vastness of a calm landscape. Therefore, the effect of a horizontal line is the direct opposite of motion, excitement, and agitation.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2: कर्णवत रेखा
The incorrect option is 1: कोणीय रेखा
The incorrect option is 3:
The incorrect option is 4: क्षैतिज रेखा
Question 46
Which group of art Souza, Ara and Raza belonged?
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 1: Progressive Artists Group
Souza, Ara, and Raza were pivotal founder members of the Progressive Artists Group (PAG), which was established in Bombay in 1947 shortly after Indian Independence. This group was formed to radically challenge and reject the conservative art establishment of the time, particularly the revivalist nationalism of the Bengal School of Art. The founders—F. N. Souza, S. H. Raza, and K. H. Ara, along with M. F. Husain, H. A. Gade, and S. K. Bakre—aimed to create a modern Indian art that was universal and free from traditional constraints. They sought to integrate traditional Indian sensibilities with the pioneering spirit of international modern art movements like Expressionism and Cubism, which fundamentally transformed the landscape of Indian modernism.
The incorrect option is 2: Group 1890.
Group 1890 was a separate, though influential, collective of twelve artists formed much later in 1962 in Bhavnagar, Gujarat. This group was ideologically distinct, seeking to create an Indian avant-garde that questioned the very notion of representation and art history. The key members were figures such as J. Swaminathan, Jeram Patel, and Himmat Shah, none of whom were part of the initial Progressive Artists Group. Souza, Ara, and Raza, having already established their careers, were never associated with this group.
The incorrect option is 3: Kalavritt.
"Kalavritt" is not widely recognized as one of the major, seminal artist collectives in the history of Indian Modernism that would include founders like Souza, Ara, and Raza. The most significant post-Independence art movements were the Calcutta Group, the Progressive Artists Group, and Group 1890. The name does not correspond to a major art movement that these three highly celebrated modern artists co-founded or were central figures in.
The incorrect option is 4: Delhi Shilpi Chakra.
The Delhi Shilpi Chakra was an important artists' group founded in Delhi in 1949 by refugee artists who had migrated from Lahore after the partition, such as B. C. Sanyal. While it shared a similar ambition to promote modern art and break with older traditions, its geographical focus and core membership were distinct. Souza, Ara, and Raza were exclusively associated with the Bombay-based Progressive Artists Group, making the Delhi Shilpi Chakra an incorrect affiliation for them.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 1:
The incorrect option is 2:
The incorrect option is 3:
The incorrect option is 4:
Question 47
Kota, Bundi and Jhalawar come under:
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 1:
The Hadoti School is a major regional sub-school of Rajasthani miniature painting that geographically and stylistically encompasses the art traditions of the princely states of Kota, Bundi, and Jhalawar in southeastern Rajasthan. This region is historically known as Hadoti, named after the Hada Chauhan Rajputs who ruled it. The Hadoti style is distinctly characterized by its dynamic compositions, vibrant colors, and a special emphasis on the depiction of nature, especially lush forests, rivers, and wildlife. The Bundi style is famous for its romantic Ragamala paintings and courtly scenes, while the Kota style is globally recognized for its magnificent and energetic royal hunting scenes, setting them apart as a collective school.
The incorrect option is 2:
The Mewar style of painting is centered primarily around Udaipur and Chittorgarh and represents the oldest and most independent school of Rajasthani art. It is distinguished by its bold lines, simple, bright color palette, and a conservative focus on religious narratives, particularly the Bhagavata Purana and Krishna Leela. Mewar, located south of the Hadoti region, maintained its indigenous aesthetic with less initial influence from the Mughal style compared to Kota and Bundi, which developed their own characteristics. Therefore, the artistic centers of Kota, Bundi, and Jhalawar are classified separately under the Hadoti umbrella.
The incorrect option is 3:
The Marwar School developed in the western desert region of Rajasthan, with its principal centers being Jodhpur, Bikaner, and Kishangarh. This school’s thematic elements often depict heroic tales, the life of the royal court against a desert backdrop, and, most famously, the highly stylized and elongated figures of the Kishangarh sub-style (like 'Bani Thani'). The geographical location and the stylistic conventions—particularly the strong emphasis on portraiture and the unique facial features—clearly distinguish the Marwar school from the forest-centric and dynamic Hadoti school of painting.
The incorrect option is 4:
The Dhundhar School of painting includes the styles developed in the centers of Jaipur and Amber. This school, situated in the eastern-central part of Rajasthan, saw the most significant and early amalgamation with the Mughal style due to close political relations. Dhundhar paintings are known for their refined, highly decorative quality, elaborate architectural settings, detailed court ceremonies, and a focus on grand portraits. This makes it a distinct stylistic category separate from the Hadoti region, which shows a different blend of folk and Mughal influences.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 1: हाड़ौती शैली
The incorrect option is 2: मेवाड़ शैली
The incorrect option is 3: मारवाड़ शैली
The incorrect option is 4: ढूंढाड़ शैली
Question 48
The publisher of "Indian Painting in the Punjab Hills" and "Kangra Painting" was:
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2:
W. G. Archer (William George Archer) was a highly influential British art historian and civil servant who served as the Keeper of the Indian Section of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. He is definitively credited with authoring the two monumental and scholarly works cited in the question: "Indian Painting in the Punjab Hills" and "Kangra Painting," both of which were published in 1952. Archer's research was crucial in meticulously documenting the various miniature painting schools of the Punjab Hills, helping to distinguish them from one another, and establishing the pre-eminence of the Kangra style for its delicate lines and lyrical Bhakti themes. His dedicated study remains an essential foundation for any serious student of Pahari miniature painting.
The incorrect option is 1:
M. S. Randhawa was a distinguished Indian administrator, botanist, and art historian whose work is also foundational to the study of Pahari art. His own landmark publications, such as Kangra Paintings on Love and Kangra Paintings of the Bhagvata Purana, are indispensable contributions to the field, making him a major contemporary of Archer. While Randhawa’s efforts were pivotal in promoting and conserving these paintings within India, he is the author of these other core texts and is not the author of the two specific book titles named in the question. Both scholars significantly advanced the study of the art, but they wrote distinct works.
The incorrect option is 3:
Anand Coomaraswamy (Ananda Kentish Coomaraswamy) was a revolutionary pioneer who essentially created the modern academic field of Indian art history in the early 20th century. He was the first scholar to systematically classify a vast body of Indian miniatures under the single, broad category of "Rajput Painting," distinguishing them from the Mughal style. His seminal work, Rajput Painting (1916), was the intellectual starting point for all subsequent specialised scholarship in the field. However, the specific, more specialised titles mentioned in the question, focusing on the Punjab Hills and Kangra as distinct regional schools, were authored by W. G. Archer decades later.
The incorrect option is 4:
Rai Krishna Das was a renowned Indian Hindi writer and an eminent art historian, widely respected for his comprehensive contributions to Indian cultural history and the popularisation of art studies in Hindi. He is perhaps best known for establishing the Bharat Kala Bhavan, an important art and archaeological museum at Banaras Hindu University. His scholarly focus was broad, encompassing Indian painting and sculpture generally, but he did not author the specialised English-language monographs on the precise subject of Pahari painting like "Indian Painting in the Punjab Hills" or "Kangra Painting" for which Archer is most famed.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2: डब्ल्यू. (W. G. Archer)
The incorrect option is 1: एम.
हालांकि, प्रश्न में उल्लिखित दोनों विशिष्ट पुस्तकें, "Indian Painting in the Punjab Hills" और "Kangra Painting", डब्ल्यू.
The incorrect option is 3: आनन्द कुमारस्वामी
The incorrect option is 4: राय कृष्ण दास
Question 49
"Dilwara Jain Temples" were built by:
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2:
Raja Vimal Shah and Raja Tejpal are the most historically significant patrons responsible for the construction of the oldest and most exquisitely carved temples within the Dilwara complex. The Dilwara Jain Temples comprise five stunning shrines at Mount Abu, but the two earliest and most magnificent structures define the site's fame. Vimal Shah, a minister of the Solanki king Bhima I, commissioned the Vimal Vasahi Temple (dedicated to Lord Adinath) in 1031 AD, which is celebrated for its highly detailed marble work. Subsequently, the Luna Vasahi Temple (dedicated to Lord Neminath) was commissioned in 1230 AD by the two Vaghela ministers, Vastupal and his brother Tejpal, establishing their crucial role in creating this architectural wonder. Since the option mentions these two names, it correctly points to the primary builders of the complex's defining temples.
The incorrect option is 1:
Raja Man Singh was a prominent Kachhwaha Rajput ruler of Amber and a trusted general of the Mughal Emperor Akbar, placing him historically in the 16th and early 17th centuries. This period is much later than the original construction of the main Dilwara temples, which date back to the 11th and 13th centuries. While he was a great patron of religious architecture, his construction efforts were primarily focused on Hindu temples, such as the rebuilding of the Kashi Vishwanath Temple and the Jagannath Temple in Puri. Therefore, he has no direct connection to the founding of this specific Jain temple complex.
The incorrect option is 3:
Raja Udai Singh is a name found in various Rajput royal lineages, most famously associated with the founding of the city of Udaipur in the 16th century (Udai Singh II of Mewar). However, the historical records detailing the patronage and construction of the Dilwara Jain Temples do not mention a Raja Udai Singh. The patronage came from the wealthy Jain ministers serving the Solanki and Vaghela dynasties of Gujarat, not the contemporary rulers of the Mewar region.
The incorrect option is 4:
Raja Ari Singh, generally referring to Ari Singh II, was a ruler of the Mewar kingdom in the 18th century, an era significantly after the Dilwara temples had already been completed and established as a major pilgrimage site. His reign was marked by political struggles and military engagements, not the construction of major new temple complexes. Consequently, he played no role in the founding or primary construction of these ancient Jain marble temples.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2:
The incorrect option is 1:
The incorrect option is 3:
The incorrect option is 4:
Question 50
It is also called "Law of Relationship":
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 3: Harmony.
Harmony is often called the "Law of Relationship" in art because it is the overarching principle that governs how all the various elements of an artwork—such as line, shape, color, and texture—are brought together into a visually pleasing, cohesive whole. It deals with the careful selection and arrangement of these elements to ensure they share a common quality, preventing the artwork from appearing cluttered or disjointed. When an artwork exhibits harmony, every component relates and belongs to the others, creating a feeling of unity and completeness, which is the ultimate visual relationship in a composition.
The incorrect option is 1:
Proportion is a distinct principle of art that deals specifically with the relative size and scale of parts within a whole object or composition. For example, it defines the size relationship of a figure's head to its body, or a foreground object to a background object. It is essentially the law of size relationship, not the general law governing the unity of all visual elements in a cohesive manner. While good proportion is necessary for realistic or consistent art, it is only one component contributing to the overall harmony of the entire piece. Proportion focuses narrowly on internal size ratios, whereas the "Law of Relationship" implies a broader focus on overall visual coherence.
The incorrect option is 2:
Rhythm is defined as a principle of art that uses the regular or irregular repetition of elements to create a sense of movement, pattern, and visual flow across the artwork. It is the visual equivalent of a musical beat or tempo, guiding the viewer's eye from one area to another. This repetition or flow establishes a distinct type of relationship based on sequence, but it does not encompass the whole-to-whole relationship of all elements. Therefore, this principle is primarily one of movement and sequence, not the comprehensive and all-encompassing coherence implied by the "Law of Relationship."
The incorrect option is 4:
Dominance, also known as Emphasis, is the principle used to create a focal point—a specific area that draws the viewer's attention and is clearly more important than the rest of the composition. This is achieved through contrast, size, or placement, which intentionally creates a relationship of hierarchy and focus among the elements. Its purpose is to deliberately make one element stand out by subduing others. While a necessary principle for guiding the viewer's eye, it works by highlighting differences and importance, which is contrary to the idea of a universal "Law of Relationship" that promotes the overall unity and coherence of the entire work.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 3:
The incorrect option is 1:
The incorrect option is 2:
The incorrect option is 4:
Question 51
In Rajasthan Geru (Red clay) and white colour (chalk) is used for making:
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 4:
Mandana is the traditional folk art of wall and floor painting predominantly practiced by women in Rajasthan, particularly among the Meena community, and is renowned for the specific materials used. The characteristic red background of Mandana is achieved by preparing the surface with a paste of cow dung mixed with Geru (red clay) or a similar pigment like Rati (local red earth). The intricate geometric, floral, and figural designs are then drawn upon this deep red base using a solution of white chalk powder, locally known as Khariya. This dual-color scheme—red clay forming the background and white chalk forming the motif—is the defining feature of the Rajasthani Mandana style, which is created to welcome deities, mark festivals, and ensure prosperity.
The incorrect option is 1:
Alpana (or Alpona) is a ritualistic floor art that is primarily associated with the Bengal region (West Bengal and Bangladesh), making it geographically distinct from Rajasthan. The principal material traditionally used in Alpana is a liquid paste made from soaked and ground Aatop Chaal (unboiled rice), which results in a purely white design on a clean or prepared surface. Although contemporary artists sometimes introduce color, the core, traditional practice of Alpana does not rely on the Geru (red clay) background that is fundamental to the Mandana of Rajasthan. Therefore, while it is a form of folk painting, it belongs to a different regional tradition with different primary materials.
The incorrect option is 2:
Chowk Purna is a term for ritual floor art that is mostly prevalent in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Central India. The term often refers specifically to drawing a sacred, usually square or rectangular, diagrammatic space (Chowk) for a ritualistic purpose. While the designs are typically drawn with white flour or chalk/limestone powder, the term itself is not the specific, defining name for the folk painting tradition in Rajasthan that uses a Geru (red clay) wash as its compulsory base. Chowk Purna is stylistically and geographically distinct in its specific application for ceremonial seating or worship space layouts.
The incorrect option is 3:
Rangoli is a very broad, generic term for floor art across India, but it is most closely associated with the traditions of Maharashtra and South India (where it is often called Kolam). The key material difference is that Rangoli typically involves the use of dry colored powders, granules, or colored sand to create the motifs, which are laid down on the floor. This technique contrasts sharply with the wet-application method of Mandana, where a red Geru clay layer is first applied as a wet base, and the white chalk is then painted on top, making the material composition and execution distinct from the Rajasthani Geru-based art.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 4:
The incorrect option is 1:
The incorrect option is 2: चौक पूरने में
The incorrect option is 3:
Question 52
"Razmnama" is a Persian translation of which Indian manuscript ?
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 4:
The Persian manuscript Razmnama is the direct translation of the great Indian epic, the Mahabharata. The Mughal Emperor Akbar commissioned this massive undertaking as part of his ambitious project to translate significant Sanskrit texts into Persian, which was the court language. Razmnama literally translates to the 'Book of War' or 'Chronicle of War,' a name that aptly refers to the monumental Kurukshetra war at the heart of the Mahabharata's narrative. The work was carried out by the scholars in Akbar’s Maktab Khana (Translation Bureau), with its illustrations forming some of the most vibrant and dense compositions of early Mughal painting. This translation was intended to promote cultural synthesis and mutual understanding between Hindu and Muslim subjects of the empire.
The incorrect option is 1:
Ramayana is another major Indian epic that was translated into Persian during Emperor Akbar’s reign, but its translation is known simply as Tarjuma-e Ramayana (Translation of the Ramayana), not Razmnama. While both epics were translated and lavishly illustrated, their Persian titles were kept distinct to reflect their unique narratives and original Indian names. The Ramayana focuses on the story of Lord Rama and his rescue of Sita, which does not centrally correspond to the 'Book of War' title, making Option 1 incorrect.
The incorrect option is 2:
Panchtantra is a famous ancient Indian collection of interconnected animal fables and wisdom literature. Although it was translated into Persian and Arabic multiple times, its most renowned Persian version, often illustrated during the Mughal period, is titled Anwar-i Suhayli (The Lights of Canopus). This title is completely different from Razmnama. The content of the Panchtantra—short moral fables—is completely unrelated to the grand, detailed military and spiritual conflicts detailed in the Razmnama.
The incorrect option is 3:
Tutinama is an illustrated Persian manuscript, known as the 'Tales of a Parrot.' It is a compilation of fifty-two stories told by a parrot to its mistress over fifty-two nights, designed to dissuade her from an illicit affair. Although the stories are derived from an older Sanskrit work, the Shukasaptati (Seventy Tales of the Parrot), the name Tutinama is already its Persian-derived title. It is a collection of popular folk stories rather than a massive religious epic of war, so it is not the manuscript referred to as Razmnama.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 4: महाभारत
The incorrect option is 1: रामायण
The incorrect option is 2: पंचतंत्र
The incorrect option is 3: तूतीनामा
Question 53
Ramgopal Vijayvargiya was born in the year:
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2:
Ramgopal Vijayvargiya (1905–2003) was a preeminent Indian painter, poet, and writer, considered a key figure in the Bengal School of Art and the revivalist movement in Rajasthan. His birth year, 1905, in Baler, Sawai Madhopur district of Rajasthan, is historically accurate and crucial for contextualizing his career. Born into a period of heightened cultural nationalism, his art embodied a fusion of traditional Indian aesthetics—characterized by graceful figures and delicate wash techniques—with a modernist sensibility. His studies began at the Maharaja School of Arts and Crafts, Jaipur, where he was mentored by masters like Shailendranath De. His longevity and significant body of work, including series inspired by Kalidasa’s poetry, cement 1905 as the starting point of his influential artistic journey.
The incorrect option is 1:
The year 1911 is incorrect because Ramgopal Vijayvargiya was born six years earlier. While the early 20th century saw the birth of many influential artists who shaped modern Indian art, 1911 is not associated with Vijayvargiya. Knowing the precise birth year helps us accurately track an artist’s trajectory and their position within the timeline of a major movement like the Bengal School. A 1911 birth would place his early career milestones, such as his first exhibition in 1928, at an exceptionally young age, which contradicts established biographical records.
The incorrect option is 3:
The year 1917 is factually wrong; it would place the artist's birth twelve years later than the established date. An artist born in 1917 could not have realistically held a solo exhibition in a major city like Calcutta, as Vijayvargiya did in 1928. This timing would also disconnect him from the early foundation years of the Bengal School, whose style he adopted and adapted. Therefore, this option severely misplaces him in the chronology of 20th-century Indian art history.
The incorrect option is 4:
The year 1930 is demonstrably incorrect and significantly later than the artist's actual birth. Ramgopal Vijayvargiya had already firmly established himself by the late 1920s, having held his first major exhibition in 1928. If he were born in 1930, he would have been a child during the period when he was actually beginning his career. In art history, such a gross miscalculation of a birth date disrupts the entire understanding of an artist's influence, development, and contribution to their respective art movement.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2:
The incorrect option is 1:
The incorrect option is 3:
The incorrect option is 4:
Question 54
"Rath", "Mandap" and "Rachna Pradhan" were the three types of temples made in :
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 4:
The correct option is 4, Mahabalipuram (also known as Mamallapuram), which stands as the monumental artistic achievement of the Pallava dynasty in South India. The Pallava period is crucial because it marked the transition from rock-cut architecture to structural temple building, and this transition is represented precisely by the three types of monuments mentioned. The Rathas are monolithic temples, each carved from a single boulder, exhibiting experimental forms. The Mandapas are rock-cut cave temples with elaborate pillared halls carved into the hillside. Finally, the Rachna Pradhan (meaning 'construction-dominant') temples are the first free-standing, structural temples, such as the famous Shore Temple, which solidified the model for later Dravidian architecture.
The incorrect option is 1:
Ellora is a vast complex of multi-religious rock-cut caves, not a center for Pallava-style temple classification. The complex, located in Maharashtra, is famous for its collection of Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain caves carved out during the Rashtrakuta and Yadava dynasties. Its most famous structure is the Kailasa Temple, which is the world's largest monolithic rock excavation—a full-sized, chariot-shaped structural temple carved downwards from a single rock. Ellora's architectural forms are mainly classified as Viharas (monasteries) or Chaityas (prayer halls) and dedicated rock-cut shrines, not by the Pallava architectural terms of Rathas, Mandapas, and Rachna Pradhan.
The incorrect option is 2:
Elephanta Caves, located near Mumbai, is a smaller rock-cut site primarily dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is most renowned for its masterpiece sculpture, the colossal three-faced Mahesh Trimurti, and its large, pillared rock-cut halls. While the rock-cut halls could be loosely considered Mandapas, Elephanta does not possess the monolithic Rathas (experimental temple models) or the later free-standing Rachna Pradhan structural temples that complete the Mahabalipuram architectural sequence. The site represents the high point of the Rashtrakuta's rock-cut sculptural art, not the Pallava's full architectural experimentation.
The incorrect option is 3:
Mount Abu is geographically situated in Rajasthan, far from the South Indian centers of Dravidian architecture. This location is famous for the Dilwara Temples, which are among the most magnificent examples of Jain architecture in India. These temples are entirely structural, constructed using pure white marble, and are renowned for their incredible microscopic carvings and ornamental details, dating from the 11th to 13th centuries. The Dilwara temples belong to the North Indian Solanki or Chalukya architectural style, which is completely different from the Rath, Mandap, and Rachna Pradhan typologies of the South Indian Pallava art at Mahabalipuram.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 4:
The incorrect option is 1:
The incorrect option is 2:
The incorrect option is 3:
Question 55
Name the centre where Jain, Bodh and Vaishnav (all religion) sculptures were made :
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2:
The correct answer is Mathura. Mathura stands as a unique and pivotal centre in ancient Indian art history because it successfully developed an indigenous school of sculpture that catered to all three major religions—Jainism, Buddhism, and Vaishnavism/Brahmanical faiths—simultaneously during the Kushana period (1st to 3rd centuries CE). The abundance of sculptures carved from the local mottled red sandstone, depicting Jain Tirthankaras, Buddha/Bodhisattvas (like the seated Katra Buddha), and various Hindu deities (such as Vishnu and Surya), unequivocally establishes Mathura as a powerful, multi-religious art production hub. This remarkable cultural syncretism makes Mathura the only option where all three traditions thrived under the same artistic school.
The incorrect option is 1:
Gandhar is known as a great centre of Buddhist art, which flourished in the north-western region of the Indian subcontinent (modern Pakistan and Afghanistan). The Gandhara school is famous for its unique Greco-Buddhist style, resulting from the influence of Hellenistic art on Buddhist themes. Its artistic focus was almost entirely on creating the first anthropomorphic images of the Buddha and Bodhisattvas. While historically important, Gandhar was not a significant production centre for Jain or Vaishnavite/Hindu sculptures. Therefore, it does not fulfill the criterion of representing all three major faiths.
The incorrect option is 3:
Sanchi is a globally renowned site, celebrated for its spectacular Buddhist stupas and toranas (gateways), which date back to the Mauryan and later periods. The extensive sculptural work at Sanchi is exclusively focused on narrating the Jataka tales (stories of the Buddha's previous lives) and depicting events from the life of the historical Buddha. The art here is predominantly aniconic (representing the Buddha symbolically) in its earliest phase. It was primarily a monastic and pilgrimage site for Buddhists and was not established as a dynamic production centre for casting or carving portable images for Jain or Vaishnavite patrons.
The incorrect option is 4:
Sarnath is considered one of the four most sacred sites for Buddhists, as it is where the Buddha delivered his first sermon (Dharma-chakra Pravartana). Consequently, Sarnath became a dominant centre for Buddhist sculpture, especially during the Gupta period (4th to 6th centuries CE), producing some of the most refined and spiritually expressive images of the Buddha. The primary art focus here was the evolution of the Buddhist icon into its perfected, idealised form. Although some minor evidence of other traditions might exist, Sarnath was not a major, concurrent centre for the production of large-scale Jain and Vaishnavite sculptures in the same way Mathura was.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2:
The incorrect option is 1:
The incorrect option is 3:
The incorrect option is 4:
Question 56
Badami Cave paintings were discovered by:
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 1:
Stella Kramrisch (1896–1993) is the revered art historian and curator widely credited with the modern academic 'discovery' of the Badami Cave Temples and their surviving paintings. Although the caves, masterpieces of Chalukyan rock-cut architecture from the 6th century CE, were known locally, it was Dr. Kramrisch who first identified their immense art-historical significance and formally published her findings in 1924. Her pivotal work systematically brought these early Hindu paintings—some of the oldest surviving murals in India—to the notice of the international scholarly community. In this context, 'discovered' refers to the essential work of scholarly classification and public recognition that cemented Badami's place as a cornerstone of Indian art.
The incorrect option is 2:
H. C. Pavel is not a name strongly associated with the foundational or pioneering research that brought the Badami Cave paintings to scholarly prominence. While many archaeologists and art historians have visited and studied the site over time, Pavel is not recognized as the individual who published the seminal work that defined the caves' importance in the early 20th century. The crucial and defining academic work of systematic documentation and interpretation is universally attributed to Stella Kramrisch. Therefore, H. C. Pavel is not the correct figure for the initial scholarly discovery of this important art centre.
The incorrect option is 3:
Vincent Smith (1843–1920) was a major historian of early India and a prolific writer on the subject of ancient Indian history and art. However, he is incorrect for two primary reasons. Firstly, Smith passed away in 1920, which is four years before the definitive publication on the Badami Cave art was made by Stella Kramrisch in 1924. Secondly, Smith's research generally focused on broader historical surveys and sites like Ajanta, not the specialized initial study that unveiled the significance of the Badami murals. The temporal and thematic focus of his career therefore excludes him as the discoverer of the paintings.
The incorrect option is 4:
C. Sivaramamurti (1909–1983) was an eminent Indian art historian and former Director of the National Museum in New Delhi. He is renowned for his extensive work on Indian sculpture, bronzes, and temple iconography, particularly from South India. However, his significant contributions came at a later date, and he is not credited with the initial scholarly identification of the Badami Cave art. The groundbreaking act of separating the Badami paintings from general classifications and providing a detailed, foundational study belongs firmly to the work of Stella Kramrisch from the 1920s.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 1:
The incorrect option is 2:
The incorrect option is 3:
The incorrect option is 4:
Question 57
In how many groups are Khajuraho temples divided ?
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 1:
The Khajuraho Group of Monuments, a prestigious UNESCO World Heritage Site, is officially divided into three primary sections based on their geographic location within the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. This systematic classification was first introduced by the British archaeologist Alexander Cunningham in the mid-19th century to facilitate the study and documentation of the scattered temples. These three groups are the Western Group, which is the largest, most famous, and contains the grandest temples like the Kandariya Mahadev; the Eastern Group, located near the old Khajuraho village and notable for including both Hindu and Jain temples such as Parsvanath; and the Southern Group, which lies at the greatest distance and includes the isolated Duladeo and Chaturbhuj temples. This three-part geographical grouping remains the universally adopted standard for all archaeological and historical studies.
The incorrect option is 2:
The assertion that the temples are divided into four groups is factually incorrect according to historical and archaeological consensus. The confusion that leads to the number four may stem from the composition of the Eastern Group, which contains a collection of Hindu temples and a separate enclosure of Jain temples. While these are distinct religious sub-groups, they fall under the singular umbrella of the Eastern geographical section. There is no formal, recognized fourth geographical cluster equivalent to the Western, Eastern, or Southern Groups.
The incorrect option is 3:
A division into two temple groups is incomplete and inaccurate as it fails to acknowledge one of the established geographical clusters. The Western Group is undoubtedly the core of the complex, but the Eastern and Southern Groups are significant elements of the overall Chandela architecture and historical site. Both the Eastern and Southern Groups contain unique and important temples, such as the Brahma Temple and the Chaturbhuj Temple, and ignoring one of these sections misrepresents the full scope of the Khajuraho monuments.
The incorrect option is 4:
The suggestion of six temple groups is highly misleading and has no basis in the standard geographical classification. While historical records indicate that the Khajuraho site originally boasted 85 temples, with about 25 surviving today, these are consolidated into only three geographical divisions (Western, Eastern, and Southern). The number six may be confused with the total square kilometers over which the surviving temples are spread, or perhaps a count of the major temples in one cluster, but it is not a correct grouping structure.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 1:
The incorrect options are 2, 3, and 4:
Question 58
How many Torandwars are there in Sanchi?
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 1: Four
The Great Stupa (Stupa No. 1) at Sanchi, which is the most famous and largest monument at this UNESCO World Heritage Site, is universally recognized for its four elaborately carved ornamental gateways, known as Toranas. These magnificent stone structures were added to the Stupa around the 1st century BCE. They stand at the four cardinal directions—North, South, East, and West—serving as the ceremonial entrances to the sacred enclosure and the circumambulatory path (pradakshina-patha). This arrangement symbolizes the four directions in which the Buddhist dharma was spread from Sanchi. The Toranas are considered masterpieces of early Indian art, renowned for their intricate sculptures depicting Jataka tales, scenes from the life of the Buddha (represented aniconically), and other important Buddhist and popular motifs.
The incorrect option is 2: Two
The answer "Two" is factually incorrect when referring to the Great Stupa (Stupa No. 1), which is the primary focus of this question. The architectural planning of the Great Stupa is based on the sacred diagram of the mandala, which requires four entry points facing the four cardinal directions. While Sanchi's Stupa No. 2 has one surviving stone railing and Stupa No. 3 has one Torana, the overall complex's iconic structure is determined by the main Stupa. Therefore, stating the number as two fails to acknowledge the complete structure and the full representation of its spiritual meaning.
The incorrect option is 3: Six
The number "Six" is incorrect as there is no archaeological or historical record indicating that the Great Stupa at Sanchi ever had six main ornamental gateways. The four Toranas at the cardinal points complete the necessary and correct geometry for the Stupa's religious function. In a multiple-choice question, the inclusion of six is likely designed to confuse students who may recall other Buddhist sites or structures with different configurations. Memorizing the standard four cardinal directions for the most important structure, Stupa No. 1, is key to answering this correctly.
The incorrect option is 4: Eight
The choice of "Eight" is incorrect and does not reflect the architectural reality of the Sanchi Stupa. While the number eight is profoundly significant in Buddhism—most notably representing the Noble Eightfold Path—it is not the number of Toranas used in the construction of the Great Stupa. The number four is a direct physical representation of the four cardinal directions, which is a core feature of the Stupa's design and is crucial for the ritual of circumambulation. Therefore, confusing the number of gateways with an important religious concept like the Eightfold Path will lead to an incorrect answer.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 1:
The incorrect option is 2:
The incorrect option is 3:
The incorrect option is 4:
Question 59
The use of different tones of one colour in a painting is called:
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2:
A Monochromatic color scheme is correctly defined as the use of a single hue, or one color, with all its possible variations in value and intensity. This is achieved by manipulating the lightness and darkness of the base color through the addition of white (creating a tint), black (creating a shade), or gray (creating a tone). For example, a painting that uses only dark blue, medium blue, light blue, and pale blue is monochromatic. This scheme is often used by artists to create a strong sense of unity, harmony, and visual quietness in a composition, while the variations in tone provide depth and dimension without introducing color complexity. It is a powerful technique for focusing the viewer's attention on form, texture, and light rather than on hue contrasts, perfectly matching the description "different tones of one colour."
The incorrect option is 1:
Achromatic literally means "without color." This term is used for a color scheme that is limited exclusively to the neutral colors: black, white, and the entire spectrum of grays that results from their mixture. In an achromatic work, no actual hue (such as red, blue, or yellow) is present. Since the question specifically mentions the use of "one colour" (or one hue) and its tones, Achromatic is an incorrect choice because it removes hue entirely. Therefore, this option describes a work based on neutrals and value, not the varied tones of a single color.
The incorrect option is 3:
Polychromatic is the direct opposite of monochromatic. The prefix 'poly' means 'many,' so a polychromatic scheme refers to the use of many different, distinct, and sometimes contrasting colors in a single artwork. This scheme emphasizes variety and vibrancy, often resulting in a complex and visually stimulating composition. It involves the use of multiple separate hues from across the color wheel. Because it uses many different hues, it fundamentally contradicts the criterion of using only "different tones of one colour," making it the wrong answer.
The incorrect option is 4:
Analogous or Related Harmony is a scheme that uses colors situated side-by-side on the color wheel, such as red, red-orange, and orange. While these colors are closely related and create a harmonious effect, they are distinct hues (separate colors), not just different tones of one single color. A monochromatic scheme is strictly limited to one hue, whereas an analogous scheme always incorporates a minimum of two or three neighboring hues, thereby making it an inaccurate answer for the concept described in the question.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 2:
The incorrect option is 1:
The incorrect option is 3:
The incorrect option is 4:
Question 60
The Prehistoric painters used it as binding medium in colours ?
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 3:
The use of Fat of Animals as a binding medium is the scientifically confirmed practice for many of the world's most famous prehistoric cave paintings. Prehistoric artists utilized natural pigments, such as ochre (iron oxide) for reds and yellows and charcoal for black, by grinding these raw earth minerals into a fine powder. To create a liquid, workable paint that would permanently adhere to the damp, rough rock surfaces of the caves, they needed a binder. Animal fats, obtained as a natural by-product from the hunted animals' bone marrow or tallow, were the most practical and readily available organic substance that provided the necessary viscosity and adhesive qualities. This mixing process resulted in an exceptionally durable paint that has successfully endured for tens of thousands of years, a testament to the effectiveness of animal fat as a binder.
The incorrect option is 1:
Gum, specifically plant gum like Gum Arabic, is an effective and common water-soluble binder, but its systematic use is associated with later periods of art, starting primarily in Ancient Egyptian and subsequent manuscript painting. Although some organic materials may have been used opportunistically, relying on plant gums would have been less consistent for nomadic hunter-gatherers, as it requires specific trees and preparation. Animal fat was a constant resource due to hunting, making it the dominant and most readily accessible binding agent.
The incorrect option is 2:
Red soil is fundamentally a pigment, not a binder. Pigments are the dry, finely ground materials that provide the colour (like ochre/red soil or charcoal). The binding medium, in this case the animal fat, is the liquid that is mixed with the dry pigment to create the actual paint. Red soil itself has no adhesive property to fix the pigment to the cave wall; without a sticky binder, the powdered soil would simply brush off the surface. Therefore, red soil was a key ingredient in their palette but served a different function than a binder.
The incorrect option is 4:
Gomutra (cow urine) has various traditional and religious uses in Indian culture, including in some folk medicine and rituals, but there is no archaeological or chemical evidence confirming its use as a standard binding medium in prehistoric rock art anywhere in the world. As a liquid, its primary component is water, and it lacks the necessary sticky protein or fatty composition required to create a durable, permanent, and water-resistant paint film on a stone substrate. A durable binder, like animal fat, was essential for the art to survive the elements inside the caves.
Choose an answer to reveal your result and explanation.
Answer & Explanation
The correct option is 3:
The incorrect option is 1: गोंद
The incorrect option is 2: लाल मिट्टी
The incorrect option is 4: गोमूत्र
